Margaret Lowman is a true pioneer and a wonderful role model for both women in science and in her initiating the study of canopy ecology of trees in several types of habitats around the world. With hard work, determination, and brilliant creativity she raised two successful sons, and did demanding field work. After a decade of marriage to a husband who gave her little support, she returned to the USA from Australia and held university positions that allowed her time to care for her children while she did her research, wrote papers, and mentored students.
This book is well written and perfectly understandable and intrigueing for both the scientist and the nonscientist. I appreciated her including family names for the plant and animal species she named, as will any reader who is not a taxonomist.
