In 2025, I plan to read at least one graphic novel every month. My January title was Let There Be Light by Liana Finck, an acclaimed New Yorker cartoonist.
This book interested me because it's a âretelling' of Genesis, the fist book of the Old Testament. Many foundational events, known within the Church as well as popular culture, are recorded in Genesis so it provides many opportunities for visual images. My favorite aspect was the depiction of God as a woman.
I really appreciated the progressive, modern interpretation of Biblical text that's traditionally very patriarchal. The black and white line drawing art isn't my preferred aesthetic, but it was effective in depicting the author's storytelling.
