I've read other Dalgleish mysteries, and I think this one is the best of all. I loved the setting (a secluded island with a lot of class), I loved the many characters, and I loved the mystery.

Suspenseful murder mystery ... a bit reminiscent of Agatha Christie in that all the suspects are isolated on an island together.

My boss's wife gave this one to me. She enjoys murder mysteries like this one, but I do not. I read it anyway because she asked me to. I wish the author did more to develop the main characters, but it was still a decent read.

After watching (and liking) the Adam Dalgliesh shows on PBS, I am pleased that my first PD James book did not disappoint.

The book had characters and situations that were obviously a continuance from previous books, but it stood on its own very well. The mystery was good, the characters "comfortable" and the writing was, at times, almost poetic.

If you have read P.D. James before, there is no need to read any further for this is another of her gripping mysteries that will keep you up late into the night reading it. How does a nice lady like her come up with the most vile forms of murder for Adam Dalgliesh and his team to solve?

This mystery could be called an "English Manor-House Mystery" since all of the characters, innocent, guilty, victims and investigators are all sequestered leaving us to decide who-dun-it

If you have a good map of the southwest of England, look for the island of Combe with its famous lighthouse off of the coast of Cornwall on the edge of the Bristol Channel. You will have a hard time finding it even on the best and latest of the Ordnance Survey charts. Why is that? In the book, P.D. James explains that the island is owned by a private trust. That trust has been sucessful in keeping the existence of this island unknowns to those who are not islanders. This book may change that.

Combe Island off the Cornish coast of England has a bloodstained history of piracy and crueltry. Owned for centuries by the same family, it now serves as a place where over-stressed men and women in positions of high authority can come to find serenity in conditions of guaranteed security. But when one of its distinguished visitors is found hanging from Combe's famous lighthouse, an apparent murder victim, the peace of the island is shattered.

Not the strongest of the Dalgliesh books but it's P. D. James so the writing is solid.

A quote on the cover states "One of the most compelling books of her remarkable career." There is no doubt in my mind this is true.

This is the BOMC edition. The only difference is in the size of the book - it is a little smaller than the original hardcover.

Didn't care for James' writing so much sex scenes. They details did not fit in well with the story in my opinion.
