This novel is not for those who like a clear plot, a defined beginning and a conclusive ending. It is, however, for those who enjoy a bit of prose, a plot as light and wispy as the most delicate tulle, and a closing rather than a true end. Winterson tells the story of a young orphan and an old, blind lighthousekeeper who, in turn, tells the story of a man of means who lives a life of deceit and longing. The orphan grows up and yearns for love and a feeling of belonging. At least these are my interpretations. I suppose this is the kind of book that leaves much to the reader.

This is a great story about a girl who is left orphan but finds a home with an old man in a lighthouse. Through him she learns about the telling stories,life and love. This is all done by an author who always has many twists and turns to her stories. She often brings in a bit of history and nothing is as it seems. I love her writing
