How could Harry Potter be better? Forget that wizard nonsense, let's have a series about how Greek mythology is real! There are kids who have one parent who is a Greek god, and they all need special training to defend themselves against the mythological monsters. Almost every child I've recommended this to has come right back for the sequel. As an adult reader who likes some children's fantasy writing but not all, I think this and the Peter and the Starcatcher books are the best I've come across in the last few years.

Very clever! I haven't read anything this entertaining about Greek mythology in a very long time - if ever. The characters are well-detailed and interesting, and the action is fresh and flowing.

Love it! I cannot say enough about this series! It is witty, exciting, and makes you look back into your mythology books to make sure you "got it" all. This first book starts the series off strong, and it only gets better as each book comes out!

A great start to a new children series bringing greek mythology to life and to modern times. My 12 yo daughter read it first and then got my younger daughter and I to read it as well. A great read for the whole family!

This book is written for any reader 12 years old and up, but the story can be enjoyed by every reading level. Even if you know only the tiniest bit of Greek mythology, it's not difficult to follow the story at all, since pieces of famous Greek myths are peppered throughout. Riordan's ability to transform the ancient Greeks' views of the gods into modern representations is an enjoyable adventure. His description of Ares is my particular favorite. This is the first in the series, so there are plenty more to look forward to after you're done.

Saying this is just for 9-12 year olds is limiting ... It's for all those young at heart, who enjoy a little light reading and maybe even enjoyed mythology in school. One evening's read for this adult, and about the same for the teenager in the house. We enjoyed being able to compare notes and laugh at the same things.

I came across this kids' book on the 'free' shelf at work and decided to read it just because so many people currently had it on their paperbackswap wish list - I wondered what the buzz was about. The twist here is that characters from Greek mythology are real, and interacting with the world today. Percy Jackson, a dyslexic teen, is actually the son of a god, and evil beings are out to get him. For his own safety, he is brought to Half-Blood Hill, a summer camp run by Dionysus (which is not nearly as fun or decadent as that sounds). And there's a quest, with companions.
I suppose this wasn't terrible, but I really didn't get into it.

The mystery and suspence is awesome in this book! If you're really into mythology, you need to read this. It's modern day people interacting with Greek gods of old.

This book is vastly different from the movie, and the old adage holds...the book is always better! I really enjoyed the movie, but this book has wonderful details, the story line is compelling, well worth reading. Percy is such a likeable character, written with all of the difficulties and cleverness that make him believeable and genuine. I read this first to see if it was something my daughter would be interested in having already seen the movie. It is honestly different enough from the movie that they feel like two completely different stories.

Initially, Percy doesn't know who his father is, but the mystery isn't really that hard to figure out for anyone who has a basic understanding of Greek mythology.
There are several plot-holes in the story, one coming to immediate mind is the repetition of Percy being warned not to speak the names of Gods or creatures aloud so as to not draw their attention. This rule seems to be inconsistent, since other characters manage to do it, plus you have to wonder how they keep the average public from mentioning these names. There's several other things you'll notice that don't make sense when you analyze it, but overall, it doesn't make the story something you can't enjoy, so it's easily overlooked.
I'd suggest reading this series, just for wanting to find out what happens, plus it'll be good reference for when the movie comes out.

I am a book freak and I've read literally thousands of books, and this is my favorite. You HAVE to read it. It's incredible how it can be so accurate about a subject that most people would groan about having to research, and still be so funny, and exciting. In my opinion Percy Jackson and the Olympians is the best series in the world (no matter how old you are) and this is one of the best books in the series.

I think it's difficult to write a review for Percy Jackson and the Olympians without drawing comparisons to Harry Potter. Both are about boys with mysterious lineage coming into their own around puberty, and their subsequent, fantastic adventures.
However, it is wrong to say that Rick Riordan "ripped off" J.K. Rowling in this book. The Lightning Thief treads much of the same territory, but also introduces young readers into the world of Greek mythology without sacrificing any of the fun that made the Potter books such a huge success.
The first book in the series focuses on Perseus "Percy" Jackson, a 12-year-old boy with lots of problems. He and his mother live with his boorish stepfather, he's always getting kicked out of one boarding school after another, and he struggles with ADHD and dyslexia. These problems seem small, however, after he begins to encounter threatening, mythical monsters everywhere he goes, from a museum field trip to a beach vacation with his mother. He soon ends up at Hogwarts -- er, I mean, Camp Half Blood -- where he will begin his hero training and hopefully learn more about his personal history, including the identity of his undetermined Olympian father.
Much of the story follows new demigod Percy on his quest to find the title character -- the person who has stolen Zeus' master lightning bolt. He's helped along the way by two friends: intelligent, Hermione-esque fellow demigod, Annabeth, and his goofy satyr guardian, Grover.
I really enjoyed this book, although its tone is a bit more YA than I'm used to. I think it's very reminiscent of the earliest Harry Potter books, and am interested to see if Riordan's voice and stories mature in future volumes of the series like the Harry Potter books did. Although the "surprises" and plot "twists" will be pretty obvious to most adult readers -- or even younger readers with an understanding of mythology -- it doesn't diminish the story. The modernization of Greek mythology and its integration in our contemporary society is lots of fun, and will give readers of any age some good laughs. I couldn't put it down.
Overall, a very enjoyable read from a series I can't wait to explore further. This is a book I'll look forward to reading with my kids in the next few years... not that I plan to wait that long to get my hands on the next book, The Sea of Monsters.

I decided to read this book because it seems to be quite popular with my 8th grade students. They keep raving about it, so I figured I might as well see what all the fuss is about. It's about a young man who finds out that he is half-god and he is sent on a quest with two friends in order to retrieve the lightening bolt of Zeus to prevent a war between three of the Greek gods. It is very fast-paced and action packed, the myths sprinkled throughout have a modern twist to them that are sure to make any reader want to know a bit more about Greek mythology.
What I couldn't get past was how it just felt like Harry Potter but with a different setting. Percy's two best friends consist of a slightly goofy male and a very intelligent female (similar to Ron and Hermione), he has a male teacher who knows his destiny but cannot revel it to him just yet (like Dumbledore), there is a special place (a camp instead of a school in this case) for those just like him and the mortal world is more or less unaware of their kind, he faces torment at home from a cruel relative (in this case though there is a kindly mother to counteract some of that whereas Harry was alone with the Dursleys)... you get the picture.
Still, it is a worthwhile read. It's a great recommendation for reluctant readers as there aren't any parts that drag, the narrative voice doesn't get bogged down with too many details, and it often draws parallels between the actual myths and what's happening in the story to give the reader a taste of Greek mythology.

Nice easy read... enjoyable characters and plot line and I will read the entire series, but I never got completely absorbed by it. Unlike the Harry Potter series, once you finish the book, it's easy to forget about it.
Hopefully, this book will encourage readers to investigate Greek and other mythologies in their original ( well closer anyway) form. So much of western culture, not to mention our languages, derives from ancient Greece and Rome, that not so long ago the study of the classical age was the foundation of education. Movies and television have converted so many mythical characters to cartoon caricatures.

Hmmm. I really wanted to like this series a lot. But it was just OK. There were two big problems for me.
1. The main character is not all that likeable. You can't identify with him.
2. It is just one action scene after another. Not much character development.
I am going to keep reading the rest of the books, but if I had the choice between this and another series, I will probably put this one on the back burner while I read something else.
I know that this is targeted to young teens, but what make fiction great in that genre is..the teens can identify with the hero. You never find out enough about Percy as a character to think "he is like me".

I read this book three times because it was so good. I'm not one to normally read books more than once, but whenever I was bored and needed something to read, I'd just pick this up and start at my favorite part. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an action filled novel with many mysteries interwined into the plot.

My daughter loved this book so much that she immediately wanted the others in the series. I think this series is great because not only is it amusing, but it is also educational. The other day I mentioned something about Medusa. My daughter heard me from the other room and corrected my mythological information. I was so excited to see that she is learning about Greek myths while reading a story that is keeping her entranced. Bravo for this great, educational series of fabulous kids' books!

Surprisingly pleasing. For those that enjoy Harry Potter, this intro to the series downplays the anglo-classroom atmosphere, but compensates with more adventure and a fun modern twist on Greek mythology.

I gave this book away to a 10 yr. old boy, who had been hit by a car. For Summer reading, along with the rest of the series, he and his twin brother were thrilled to be able to enjoy them together. They obviously knew how great a writer Rick Riordan is. That fact was testimony enough for me that this was a GREAT book!

When you first pick up the book, you think this is going to be a "normal" pre-teen novel about a boy who has problems in school and in life. Then things begin to happen that make you doubt what you are reading. Once you get over the initial shock and refocus your thinking, you have found yourself riding headlong into a terrific adventure with characters that make you wish you were there with them, so you could have them as friends. By the time I finished this story, I was so happy to know that there were more to come and that I wouldn't have to abandon this new world forever! A great read, especially for those boys who don't particularly like to read books, and find Harry Potter a little overwhelming. Percy has just enough attitude to appeal to that crowd, but is still so obviously the "good guy" that they can't help but root for him and his friends.

I first heard of The Lightning Thief from a friend who had been a Classics major in college, and who sought out works of fiction based on the Greek myths. My friend is also an unrepentant YA reader, and has convinced me that YAs are not all just for a younger audience. This is an engaging and entertaining series about young Percy (short for Perseus) Jackson, a half-blood with one parent a Greek god and another parent a human. Like popcorn, reading this goes down very easy. 4 stars.

Rick Riordan has a great sense of humor, but in my opinion, he is not a good writer. Much of the middle third of the book is random adventures strung together that do not advance the plot. The premise and characters bear a strong resemblance to Harry Potter. I also found the end disturbing. A respected character turns another to stone with little provocation and sells his body to a museum as a statue, and this is applauded! That and the weak writing make me hesitant to recommend this book.

This book, by far, is one of the best first books in a series since the first Harry Potter book. Rick Riordan has created a believable world within a world; the world of the Greek Gods and their children, the Half-Bloods. Riordan weaves modern life with the world of the Gods in such a way that it makes the reader actually believe this could happen. I would suggest this book to any child or adult who enjoys fantasy books.

A great start to a great series! I absolutly LOVED this book and series! It's a good book if you like fantsy and greek mythology. I didn't know anything about greek mythology and now I can recite all of the major olympian gods. It is for kids from ages 8-12.

This book has an overall interesting story concept, but it's fairly obvious that the author was trying to break into a genre made popular be series like Harry Potter and Artemis Fowl. So if you like those types of books, like I do, you will most likely enjoy this.
Initially, Percy doesn't know who his father is, but the mystery isn't really that hard to figure out for anyone who has a basic understanding of Greek mythology.
There are several plot-holes in the story, one coming to immediate mind is the repetition of Percy being warned not to speak the names of Gods or creatures aloud so as to not draw their attention. This rule seems to be inconsistent, since other characters manage to do it, plus you have to wonder how they keep the average public from mentioning these names. There's several other things you'll notice that don't make sense when you analyze it, but overall, it doesn't make the story something you can't enjoy, so it's easily overlooked.
I'd suggest reading this series, just for wanting to find out what happens, plus it'll be good reference for when the movie comes out.

Recommended by Horn Book. 12 year old Percy (short for Perseus) and his 2 cohorts face some wild adventures with Greek gods (emphasis on the small g) and come through battle scarred but triumphant.

I enjoyed this book very much. Maybe not as intricate or quite as engaging as the Harry Potter series was, but who can match that?! Still, all in all, interesting and unique characters so I will proceed on to the second in the series to see if grows in story and situations.

I am only familiar with Greek and Roman pantheons through the little I learned in Junior High School, so while I found many of the references obvious, some of them were a surprise. While reading, I fact-checked with my husband (who loves Greek and Roman mythology). He was impressed with the little-known things the author decided to slip in. Of course, the author takes a few creative liberties here and there, but all-in-all the mythology presented is fairly accurate.
With that said, I would like to say that I loved the writing in this book. It is engaging and consistent. The characters are fairly well-rounded and relatable. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.

I really enjoyed the Greek mythology weaved into this book. I never really put much effort into learning about the Greek gods, so it's nice learning about them a little through the series.
This book has a lot of action and a lot of potential to be a good movie. Let's hope Hollywood doesn't disappoint.
While I don't mind, some families may be concerned that this book depicts Greek gods, as well, gods. I can already hear the arguments that it's paganism, blasphemy, etc. I don't think kids rushed out to become ordained witches and warlocks after the Harry Potter series, so I think we're ok here.

Of course every middle school boy has to have friends to help complete the task.

Being a HUGE fan of the Harry Potter series, I heard of this book and thought it could be similar. I really enjoyed it and have sense read the whole Percy Jackson series. The story of the Greek gods is very interesting. I LOVED it! :D

I bought a book for my library called "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan. It's a children's book, about 6th grade level and up. I often read children's and young adult titles so I can steer kids towards things they'll enjoy.
Anyway, I loved this book! The main character is Percy: 12-year-old, ADHD and dyslexic. He struggles in school with his dyslexia, but he's smart. He gets in trouble a lot (ADHD) but not intentionally. Lo and behold, he discovers that he's only half mortal; the Greek Gods are still alive and well up on Mt. Olympus, and Percy's father is actually Poseidon! This means Percy is a "hero", a demi-god or half-blood. He has to go to Camp Half-Blood for instruction and training, because all those great monsters from Greek mythology are after him. And of course, he must go on a hero's quest.
The thing I absolutely loved was the positive spin the author puts on Percy's "afflictions"--dyslexic? No, his brain is really hardwired to read Ancient Greek. I found this book to be entertaining and an easy read. It's one of those books that leaves you wanting more. I'm reading book 2 and finding it as enjoyable.

From the other reviewers, you can get the idea of the story. I am glad I borrowed this from the library as I think is a very disturbing book for children and some adults to read. WARNING!!!! it is a grafically violent book with very evil and scary characters with even scarier moments. The premise is interesting and I was excited to read more until I came to the oracle, this character is way too evil and is suppose to be a good guy? It is well written and it captures your attention but it is just too full of evil. I feel there is no real line that can be drawn between good and evil. I will not continue to read the book nor will I recommed it to anyone else.

Dear Mortal Reader: I have sworn upon the Rier Styx that the events in this book are purely fictional. There is no such twelve-year-old boy as Perseus "Percy" Jackson. The Greek Gods are nothing more than old myths. They certainly never have children with mortals in the twenty-first century, nor is there any such place as Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for Demi-Gods on eastern Long Island where I train young heros to survive against their monstrous enemies. Percy never met a satyr or a daughter of Athena. They most emphatically did not embark upon a quest together across the United States to reach the gates of the Underwolr and prevent a catastrophic was between the gods. Having said this, I must warn you to think carefully before starting this book. If you feel anything stirring within uou as you read-if you begin to suspect that this story may be describing something about your own life-STOP READING IMMEDIATELY. I cannot be held responsible for the consequences. May the gods of Olympus (who of course do not exist) watch over you.
