THIS BOOK IS AWESOME. It is very well written and it holds your interest from page 1 to the end. The plot moves fluidly. The ending packs a huge punch that you don't quite expect but you know the main character, Haller, is working on setting something up throughout. The foreshadowing pulls you through the book. A definite must read !!

Connelly did his usual excellent job here. I almost quit after the first thirty pages because I usually get turned off by books about sleazy lawyers (ever notice how many lawyers become novelists - makes you wonder if we have way too many). Anyhow, I stuck with it and was rewarded with an interesting yarn. Connelly seems to have found a new vein to mine.

I discovered Michael Connelly long ago when I read "Blood Work", but never really got into his books.
Recently I picked up a few of his Audio Books and was amazed to find that I love his writing.
This story tells of a Defense Lawyer, his 2 ex-wives and the unfortunate case that would change his life forever. I couldn't wait to hear the next CD or what the next twist in the road would reveal. An excellent book.

As good as Connelly gets. Plot moves easily and quickly to the climatic finish. If you like Michael Connelly you'll love this book.

This was a really good book. Even though Michael Haller was a bit sleazy as a defense lawyer, he was honest in his dishonesty, if that makes sense. I thought the story was very suspenseful and took a turn I was not expecting. I was on the edge of my seat for the last 50 pages waiting to see how it would all play out.

Looks like I'm the black sheep of The Lincoln Lawyer reviewers. The book was good, though a bit cheesy in parts - typical Michael Connelly style. It was, of course, predictable about 1/4 way through, but the story and characters were sufficiently interesting enough to keep me reading until the end. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy this book, but it makes a great swapper!

First Line: The morning air off the Mojave in late winter is as clean and crisp as you'll ever breathe in Los Angeles County.
I overdosed on legal thrillers years ago, when John Grisham and Scott Turow were at the very top of their game. Although the plots were still complex and dazzling, I'd begun to feel claustrophobic for some reason, and I stopped reading them. I needed to get out of the courtroom.
If there's one author whom I can't ignore, it's Michael Connelly. When The Lincoln Lawyer came out, I couldn't believe it. One of my favorite authors had written a legal thriller! I studiously ignored the book until The Brass Verdict appeared. Once I realized that Mickey Haller, the Lincoln lawyer himself, was going to be appearing with my beloved Harry Bosch, I knew I'd have to bite the bullet and read up on what makes Mickey Haller tick.
I should've bitten that bullet a long time ago.
Defense attorney Mickey Haller does a lot of his business from the back of his Lincoln. In fact, he has a whole fleet of the automobiles. By the time I met Mickey, he had all the appearance of a completely jaded legal hack:
"I didn't deal in guilt and innocence, because everybody was guilty. Of something. But it didn't matter, because every case I took on was a house built on a foundation poured by overworked and underpaid laborers. They cut corners. They made mistakes. And then they painted over the mistakes with lies. My job was to peel away the paint and find the cracks. To work my fingers and tools into those cracks and widen them. To make them so big that either the house fell down or, failing that, my client slipped through."
For all his world-weary talk of everyone being guilty of something, Haller is also pointing the finger at himself. He feels that he didn't do everything possible when he defended Jesus Menendez, who's now looking life without parole straight in the eyes from the "comfort" of San Quentin. Regardless of how he may be perceived outwardly, Haller is a good guy who remains on very good terms with both ex-wives, and who secretly longs to be presented with a truly innocent man to defend. (He worries that, after all this time, he won't be able to recognize innocence when he sees it.)
Then Louis Roulet is charged with assault and attempted murder. This is what Haller calls a "franchise case" because Roulet's mother will pay any amount of money to see her son declared innocent. But the more Haller and his investigator Raul Levin work on this case, the more things don't add up. Haller finds himself caught in a deadly web, and it's going to take every speck of his smarts to work his way out of it intact.
Connelly worked his magic on me once again. Within a few pages, I was fascinated with the character of Mickey Haller. For all his quiet, matter-of-fact posturing and pronouncements, he still retains a remarkable degree of gullibility. The pacing is perfect throughout the book, gathering speed with each successive chapter. When Haller realizes the trap he's fallen into, the plan he puts together to extricate himself is brilliant and almost guaranteed to keep readers glued to the page.
Since I had such a great reading experience with Lawyer Haller, am I going to add legal thrillers to my reading diet once more? No, but I certainly am ready for The Brass Verdict!

In the first-ever legal thriller by crime novelist Michael Connelly, author of the bestselling Harry Bosch saga (The Closers, The Narrows, Lost Light, et al.), ethically ambiguous defense attorney Mickey Haller's search for innocence in a high-profile case involving a young Beverly Hills playboy leads him to the ultimate evil...
A veteran defense attorney, Haller is understandably cynical about the system. ("The law was a large, rusting machine that sucked up people and lives and money. I was just a mechanic. I had become an expert at going into the machine and fixing things and extracting what I needed from it in return.") When a "franchise" case falls into his lap, one that could give him his biggest payoff ever, Haller jumps at the chance to defend a rich realtor accused of brutally beating and attempting to rape a wannabe actress with a shady background. The baby-faced realtor is vehement about his innocence, and as Haller begins to build his case, he's confident of victory -- that is, until he inadvertently discovers something that will not only overturn an old murder case but also put him and his crew in mortal peril
Fans of Connelly's previous Harry Bosch novels will find The Lincoln Lawyer even more compelling -- since Haller happens to be Bosch's half brother and, according to sources, there is a sequel in the works that includes the maverick former LAPD detective! Like its luxury-auto namesake, The Lincoln Lawyer is a sumptuous thriller that excels in every measurable category: plot complexity, character development, pacing, intensity, etc. It is, quite possibly, Connelly's best yet.

I wasn't in the mood for a lawyer story when I started this some months ago, so I kept putting it down. I'm still not in the mood for a lawyer story, but I wanted to get this book out of the way. For a book to impress me even when I'm reluctant to read it, it has to be good, and this one is. The opening expositions moved a bit slowly, I thought, or maybe it was just I wasn't inclined to delve into the sleazy Los Angeles world it was set in. But the pacing was great, and the ending unexpected and a knockout. Mickey Haller is a defense attorney who knows the system inside and out, and knows how to play the game to get his guilty clients off. When he is chosen to defend a rich Beverly Hills boy arrested for assault, Mickey believes he has finally found his ticket to success - a long, expensive case with a client rich enough to pay whatever he needs. But suddenly Mickey discovers that he has a live snake on his hands, and one that is ready to strike with all venom - and that if he's not careful, he will be the target.
Connelly deftly takes us through the maze of the legal system, expertly showing both sides of the fence, and his characters are never two-dimensional but rich and real. One is left with the conviction that he has shown us a true face of evil that exists in the world out there. I hope this becomes another hit series for him as it certainly has the potential to equal his popular Harry Bosch.

The lastest book by Michael Connelly, New York Times Best seller list the last month. Good story about a lawyer who doesn't have a real office just works out of one of his four Lincolns. Michael Haller thinks he finally has an innocent man to depend instead of his usual assortment of clients. As his investigations continues he realizes he has a conflict of interest with his new "franchise client". Is this rich client, Haller's ticket to a big fee or one way ticket to prison. Very good. This book is by the same author as the Harry Bosch police detective series. It tells the story from the opposite angle, that of the lawyer rather than the police.
The main character, Mickey Haller, is a down and out lawyer who has made a mess of his life. He's a very likeable guy, not half as bad as he would like people to think. Mickey takes a high profile case that he hopes will get him back on top and in the money. Of course nothing and no one is what it seems at first glance. Lots of twists and turns, hard to put it down. It's much less grim than the Bosch series and just as enjoyable.

This book (after I read it) has been the Gold Standard for any legal mystery/thriller I have read since (I read an earlier book, not the movie tie-in). It's that good. Now, I obviously haven't read every available legal procedural out there. But I have read over 400 books in the last three years, almost all in the mystery/thriller genre. So, while still just my opinion, I do have several other books to compare it to. And this has always been the best in that genre and in the top five of all books read.
The characters are all well liked (if and when Connelly intended) and well fleshed out. There are of course many scenes of court room drama, but this is where the book excels. I don't usually spend a lot of time in a review telling what the book is about, but rather, how well it is done. Even the best authors throw out the occasional stinker.
Everything you would hope to have in a book, this one has in spades. Pace, plotting, ending, twists (probably the most surprises I have come across in a novel), turns, suspense, accuracy and realism. There is also subtle humor which is something I prefer, though some don't. Everything just flows, it just works itself into such a pleasure that it may take a while to read a book that isn't somewhat disappointing by comparison. We all know how that is.
So now that I have built this up, I hope you aren't let down! I find that the more media hype sometimes, you're expectations are sooo overblown that you focus more on the hype than actually enjoying the read. Don't do it!
I don't plan on seeing the movie. I have never personally seen a movie that could touch the depth of a novel. I won't take that away from this book.

Mickey Haller has spent all his professional life afraid that he wouldn't recognize innocence if it stood right in front of him. But what he should have been on the watch for was evil.Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend the clients at the bottom of the legal food chain.
It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients. From bikers to con artists to drunk drivers and drug dealers, they're all on Mickey Haller's client list. But when a Beverly Hills rich boy is arrested for brutally beating a woman, Haller has his first high-paying client in years.
It's a franchise case and he's sure it will be a slam dunk in the courtroom. For once, he may be defending a client who is actually innocent. But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face-to-face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame. To escape without being burned, Haller must use all of his skills to manipulate a system in which he no longer believes.

From Publishers Weekly: "Starred Review. Veteran bestseller Connelly enters the crowded legal thriller field with flash and panache. Los Angeles criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller regularly represents lowlifes, but he's no slickster trolling for loopholes in the ethics laws. He's haunted by how he mishandled the case of (probably innocent) Jesus Menendez, and, though twice divorced, he's on good terms with his ex-wives; one of them manages his office, and the other, an ambitious assistant DA, occasionally tumbles back into bed with him. When Mickey signs on to defend young real estate agent Louis Roulet against charges of assault, he can't help seeing dollar signs: Roulet's imperious mother will spend any amount to prove her beloved son's innocence. But probing the details of the case, Mickey and private investigator Raul Levin dig up a far darker picture of Roulet's personality and his past. Levin's murder and a new connection to the Menendez case make Mickey wonder if he's in over his head, and his defense of Roulet becomes a question of morality as well as a test of his own survival. After Connelly spends the book's first half involving the reader in Mickey's complex world, he thrusts his hero in the middle of two high-stakes duels, against the state and his own client, for heart-stopping twists and topflight storytelling. For defense attorney, Mickey Haller, this case was a dream come true for him and would solve his money problems. But, the more he investigated the murder that his wealthy new client had been accused of, the more certain he became that he was dealing with very troublesome issues that could not only end his career, but his life. Mickey Haller is a defense attorney and to say that he's not liked by the cops and prosecuting attorneys is putting it mildly. When you think about it, though, it makes sense, because a defense attorney's job is to either get the criminal off free, or to get him the easiest sentence possible. Not a very righteous or noble job, but it's the way our justice system works. Mickey gets most of his work from his tacky advertisements (yellow pages, park benches, etc.) and he does pretty good for himself, but when he gets a call to represent a Beverly Hills rich boy, he sees dollar signs. The big question is whether or not his new client is guilty. Haller has learned not to ask or care. The book takes us through his investigation of the crime, the parties involved, as well as their backgrounds, in his preparation for defending his client. There are several twists that I didn't see coming, especially at the end, and it was a surprise and made me upset that the book was ending, as I wanted it to go on and on! I immediately started searching for my next Michael Connelly and Mickey Haller book. I'm hooked!

Beautiful Copy! This #1 bestselling legal thriller from Michael Connelly is a stunning display of novelistic mastery - as human, as gripping, and as whiplash-surprising as any novel yet from the writer Publishers Weekly has called "today's Dostoevsky of crime literature."
Mickey Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense attorney who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, traveling between the far-flung courthouses of Los Angeles to defend clients of every kind. Bikers, con artists, drunk drivers, drug dealers - they're all on Mickey Haller's client list. For him, the law is rarely about guilt or innocence, it's about negotiation and manipulation. Sometimes it's even about justice.
A Beverly Hills playboy arrested for attacking a woman he picked up in a bar chooses Haller to defend him, and Mickey has his first high-paying client in years. It is a defense attorney's dream, what they call a franchise case. And as the evidence stacks up, Haller comes to believe this may be the easiest case of his career. Then someone close to him is murdered and Haller discovers that his search for innocence has brought him face-to-face with evil as pure as a flame. To escape without being burned, he must deploy every tactic, feint, and instinct in his arsenal - this time to save his own life.

Mystery about defense attorney Mickey Haller, his 2 ex-wives, 4 Lincoln Town cars that he uses as offices and dozens of guilty clients. This book deals primarily with one of his evil clients and has a twist at the end.

I love Michael Connelly's books and think this is the best one yet.
I like the protagonist, Mickey Haller, an attorney with two ex wives, four Lincoln Town Cars and no office. I like Mickey very much and hope Connelly will make a series with his character.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Great characters, nice plot. Better than "The Poet"!
Mickey Haller is a defense attorney whose clientele includes prostitutes, bikers, and other somewhat shady characters. So when he lands a rich-boy client, he thinks he hit the jackpot. His client is accused of assaulting a prostitute and Mickey finds enough evidence for his client to go free. But he also digs up new evidence on a former client who might be falsely imprisoned for murder, and to implicate his current client in far more serious crimes.

For defense attorney Mickey Haller, the clock is always running. With two ex-wives, four Lincoln Town Cars that he uses as offices, and a dozen of guilty clients, he can't afford to miss a trick. When he gets picked by a Beverly Hills rich boy arrested for assault, Mickey sees a franchise case: a nice, long, expensive trial with maximum billable hours-until it hurtles him into the last place he wants to be. Suddenly hustling, cynical Mickey Haller is confronted with pure evil and someone who may be truly innocent. Now, for a lawyer who has always gone for the easy score, getting justice means taking the deadliest risk of all. Great book, easy read, hard to put down.

Mickey Haller has spent all his professional life afraid that he wouldn't recognize innocence if it stood right in front of him. But what he should have been on the watch for was evil.
Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense attorney who operates out of the back seat of his Lincoln Town Car, traveling between the far-flung courthouses of Los Angeles to defend clients of every kind. Bikers, con artists, drunk drivers, drug dealers they're all on Mickey Haller's client list. For him, the law is rarely about guilt or innocence it's about negotiation and manipulation.
To escape without being burned, he must deploy every tactic, feint, and instinct in his arsenal this time to save his own life.
There is a Harry Bosch connection to Mickey Haller, the main character in The Lincoln Lawyer. In Michael Connelly's second novel, The Black Ice, Harry Bosch reminisces about his return from the Vietnam War and his attempts to find his father. He found out that his father was the famous criminal defense attorney, J. Michael Haller. Unfortunately, Haller died before Bosch could get to know him. At his funeral, Harry discovered that he had half brothers and half sisters. Mickey Haller is one of Harry Bosch's half brothers.

onnelly writes about Mickey Haller, an attorney, who conducts most of his criminal defense legal practice from the back of a Lincoln Towncar equipped with a computer, fax, and phone line. In the first few chapters, Haller lands a huge case defending a rich guy who is accused of murder.
The drama unfolds quickly and culminates in a shocking and exciting finale that would never actually happen in real life. I like this book and the way that Connelly writes because there are some excellent courtroom scenes that are fairly accurate. Of course the scenes are trumped up a bit for the sake of the novel, but compared to my courtroom experience they were accurate enough.

I read THE LINCOLN LAWYER for this month's "Book-to-Movie" theme in my online book club, The Reading Cove.
The opening really engaged me. Michael Connelly's writing was sharp, and I really felt like I was riding around L.A. with busy defense attorney Mickey Haller in the back seat of his Lincoln Town Car going from courthouse to courthouse. And it's a great behind-the-scenes look at the legal system from the defense perspective.
By the middle, the pacing slowed. A lot. And I found myself able to skim through lots of pages without missing much.
The ending was unexpected, but since my interest level had wained with the slow in pace, it wasn't jaw-droppingly so. B-

Defense Attorney Mickey Haller is busy interviewing clients and appearing at hearings. Instead of an office, he works out of his fleet of Lincoln Town Cars. He feels very lucky when he gets a call about Louis Roulet, a rich Real Estate Broker accused of assault. Mickey sees this as a "franchise" case, a big case that will last months where he'll be able to maximize his billable hours. But his luck isn't holding out. When a friend helping him with the case is murdered, Mickey is conflicted by his ethics and conscience.
This is the first book in Michael Connelly's Mickey Haller series. I liked the way Mickey was always thinking of an angle to get his clients off the hook. We got to meet several of his clients early in the book. At first I thought these short introductions were just taking us away from the real story, but they do end up playing into the overall mystery. I look forward to reading more books in this series. My rating: 4.5 Stars.
