Maggie Stiefvater is back with a sequel to last year's Shiver. No spoilers as the book isn't even out in the stores yet but I will tell you that this story is different from the last one. It doesn't have the quietness and the feeling of going with the flow and just being happy in the moment. It has the feeling of anticipation coursing all through it, anticipation of something you don't particularly look forward to but that is going to happen regardless because that's how life is, things happen. It also sets the scene for mystery, so I'm betting your gray cells will get a workout trying to answer all the why's before the last installment is on the shelves.
The characters have more depth to them, they aren't children any more, even if they were already 17-going-on-30. They're young adults making their decisions and choosing their path, even if they have to face the fact that they may be burning bridges in the process. The secondary characters are also multi-dimensional and interesting and they make the reader care about them. They also provide a nice contrasting backdrop for the leads.
What puts these books on my list of favorites is that so much of the story is real, the people, the situations, the consequences. If everything worked out perfectly for everyone all the time it would've been fake and Maggie doesn't write fake. What Maggie does write is real people living real lives with all their beauty and all their ugliness and she's not afraid to put it all out there. Writers who are afraid write rubbish and this is not rubbish, very far from it.
This is the kind of book I'm glad is out there for the young readers. They'll have a chance to read about real tenderness and caring and appreciation and devotion and relationships that aren't flashy and won't end up on the front pages of the social gossip columns or on TV but will make all the difference in the world in the lives of two people.

This is the second book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Stiefvater. The third (and final) book Forever is due out in July 2011. This was a good follow-up to the first book and fans of the first should find nothing to complain about with this book.
In this book we start where we left off in the last book. Sam is cured, but now Grace is starting to have trouble with fevers and feeling ill. Isabel (whose brother Jack died while she was trying to cure him in the last book) spends a ton of time with Grace. Also some new wolves enter into the story; meet Cole St. Claire, a sexy guy with a mysterious past who seems all about causing trouble.
I will say off the bat that I thought Shiver was creative and easy to read, but slow. The same holds true for this book. Stiefvater takes a very creative approach to werewolves and that creativity continues some in this book. We actually get involved in a bit of science behind the werewolf craziness and I liked that. I kind of missed having the temperatures listed at the beginning of each chapter, but they weren't as important since Sam is cured. The characters are very likable and complex and the dialogue is easy to read. There is just something about this book that draws you forward, I think it is mostly the question of Grace's illness and the threat of Cole.
I have some of the same complaints with this book that I had with the last book. It is slow. Not a ton happens throughout the book. Like in Shiver, we plod through the character's day to day life and very slowly the plot unfolds. There actually isn't a ton of plot to unfold, but somehow it still manages to be engaging. When I finished the book and thought back to what actually happened, really it wasn't all that much. Somehow Stiefvater makes it work for her though and adds in some beautiful prose that almost makes up for the lack of plot.
I also have to mention that I love that this takes place in my home state of Minnesota. Stiefvater does an excellent job of getting a feel for spring in Minnesota and the excitement that comes with the rising temperature.
Overall this was a good continuation of the series. I found it engaging and easy to read, but still thought it moved a bit slow and wished that the plot was a bit more complex. I eagerly await the conclusion to the series Forever.

Told from four characters' points of view, LINGER lacks action and movement, but its breathtakingly gorgeous writing, character development, and romance will have fans of SHIVER squealing with delight, thoroughly satisfied and craving more.

Reading LINGER is like submerging yourself in exquisite poetry: the language flows off the page and whispers its way through your bloodstream, all the way into your heart. Some books rely on the strength of their plots and ideas to carry the story; Maggie Stiefvater has her words.
At the same time, that was my biggest issue with LINGER, the one I had with SHIVER as well: I found the story lackingâ¦well, heart, I guess. Grace and Sam's love is so all-encompassing, so beautifully expressed, that it's almost stifling. I I found myself sighing with frustration every time the two of them were in a scene together, so eager was I to move on to other scenes in which they didn't appear together and suck all the vivacity out of everything.
But even the new narratorial POVs are not enough to stave off this series' painstakingly slow pace. Maggie seems to enjoy taking her time with her words and mundane events. The upside of this is that new characters like Cole are fully fleshed out in a way few secondary characters introduced in the second book of a series ever are; the downside is that, unless you're a diehard SHIVER fan, the book is all too easy to put down.
My interest in this series, however, is redeemed by Maggie pulling off another fantastic ending. In fact, despite the slow plotting, LINGER does very much up the stakesâin an extremely startling, yet gratefully welcome, wayâfor Grace and Sam's world. It satisfies SHIVER fans' craving for more beautiful writing and romance, and keeps the story turning by adding in these new, yet not entirely arbitrary, elements. I liked this one even more than the first book. Grace is sick and Sam is spending his time trying to figure out the wolfs. Isabelle is in a lot more of this story and she it just too funny. Its so hard not to love and sympathize with Isabelle. Especially when she finds herself attracted to the new wolf Cole. I'm not sure everyone will love the end of this book but I think things are progressing toward and ending that everyone will love. I can't wait for the next installment.
I thought this book was better than the first. I was happy when two new characters, Isabel & Cole were introducted. They were much more interesting to read about.
When I got Book 2, I had to go back and reread Book 1, as it had been awhile. Now I am done with both and have to get on to Book 3! I have been enjoying the story line and characters, though the ending has left me hanging. :) Good story.
The 2nd installment of the wolves of mercy falls. Other readers have complained that this was slow, I disagree. It was fast paced, I liked the new character Cole and what he brought to the story and thought this was a great continuation of book one. Grace and Sam get a bit sappy with their teen romance, but it IS a teen romance.
Shiver has a lot of offer. Foremost, I love how the characters have depth. Sam is unbelieving in what he has become; Cole is so tortured that he never wants to be human again; Grace is going through some strange changes; Isabel is struggling to come to terms with her brother's death. It's all good stuff. One of the great things Stiefvater does to convey the depth of her characters is to switch the point of view of the story between her characters. Even sometimes in the same chapter the point of view will flip flop between Isabel and Cole for example, so we're getting both points of view on one situation at the same time.
Second, the plot. Oh, the plot. I don't want to spoil, but I love how things came full circle in this book, which ended on a cliffhanger. But I have to wait until at least July to find out how it ends. It was good read for sure, except for the font color. The next book's cover is read and I hope the font won't also be red - that won't be fun to read.

The first book was wonderful! I became so engrossed in the story, I went out the day I finished reading the first and bought this one, I eagerly devoured it, only to find the worst ending EVER! I wouldn't recommend this book, if you enjoyed the first, hang on to that lovey-dovey, YAY HE LIVED feeling...
Maggie Stiefvater is a most excellent author, she weaves magical modern tales of the fantastical variety. I thoroughly enjoy her writing style. A more tame story for the young adult level. Grace and Sam sleep in the same bed, and Grace runs away to Sam. No sex in the book, some "make-out" scenes. A bittersweet and touching love story along with an angst ridden possibly blooming romance....

The story is about a boy who was a wolf and about a girl who is destined to become one. Even though they are together now, in Linger, they have to fight to stay together. Secretly Grace's health is deteriorating and all the signs are leading her to believe that the wolf in her if fighting to be free.
Linger begins where Shiver leaves us with Sam and Grace together after the surprising risk they take to keep Sam in his human form. Sam is still in shock over the possibility that he will stay human, no longer shift to a wolf form, and stay with Grace forever. If that were the case, the story would end there.
All is well for a while, Grace and Sam could not be happier planning a future together. Grace begins to feel there is something wrong as she notices regular nosebleeds and a strange wolf smell on herself. To add to that, Grace and Sam are torn apart when Grace's parents find out that Sam and Grace spend every waking and sleeping moment together. They forbid her to see Sam. All the while she is becoming more sick. Grace eventually makes the decision to be with Sam and leave her absentee parents.
New characters are introduced into the story as Beck, Sam's pack leader, recruits new pack members, who unfortunately are not the average recruits, Cole and Victor. Sam struggles with understanding why Beck recruited members so famous which could reveal their existence. To complicate matters, Beck has transformed and is not expected to shift back, ever. Sam is left to assume the new pack leader role. Cole and Victor are well-known rockers who wanted to escape their life of bad decisions. Sam and Cole do not get along, but when they are confronted by threats to their pack mates and Grace's possible death they find away to help each other. Even Isabel join the struggle and fight to save the pack and Grace.
The story is written from 4 character perspectives: Grace, Sam, Cole and Isabel. The author does a great job of transitioning between each character's voice making sure to keep their distinctive personalities within each chapter. My favorite quote is from Isabel talking to Grace about leaving home to be with Sam "...because you couldn't live without The Boy's stunning Boyfruits for another night." (pg. 311) I just love the author's sense of humor amongst all the drama.
The author certainly give characters the right balance of melodrama and humor. Between crying there is laughing... The author has created a unique and original plot around the existence of wolves creating the idea of escapism where the character can give into their raw senses. The conclusion of Linger is both expected and unexpected. I cannot wait to hear Grace's voice in Forever...I won't spoil it. This is another great young adult (YA) novel from Maggie Stiefvater and I am eager to see the next book in the trilogy, Forever, due out in July 2011.

After an average liking of Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls Book 1,) I figured I would continue with Linger. I am no quiter! I actually enjoyed this one a little more than the first, mostly because of Cole and Isabelle. They are characters I really enjoyed! Grace and Sam are kind of annoying.
I really enjoyed Cole and Isabelles point of view, it was nice seeing things from a different side. But again, the author made that awkward thing were the characters are different when someone else is speaking! It really makes no sense to me. You know who the characters are and then all of a sudden they change? Weird.
This was a tad more enjoyable then the first, and I will read the third, Forever, eventually. 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Sam also sings in this edition. LOVE IT. I did love the Cole/Isable story, this book I think was really about them and Sam and Grace were kind of just side characters. I am looking forward to FOREVER, but I don't think I would have felt too bad if I hadn't read Linger.

Linger is the second in the wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, soon to be followed by Forever. I was captivated by the first installment, Shiver, by Stiefvater's take on the werewolf phenomenon. Her wolves become wolves for the winter, human for the summer until they eventually stop shifting and remain wolves. In Shiver, it appears that Grace & Sam have found a cure for Sam--to shop shifting and remain human. Linger builds on that premise, focusing more on Sam's adjustment to having a future as a human & on his relationship with Grace. However, Sam's cure may just be a stop-gap solution. Wolves are dying and someone human may be dying as well.

His relationship with Grace is tested by the sudden interest of her parents, who were all but absent in Shiver. At this point, however, Cole is not the man to give it to her. Cole's character is interesting--his life & background seem incongruous & somewhat convenient to the plot. Not bad for the second part of the series. We learn about the new wolves and the new difficulties that Grace and Sam face. Granted this book does get slow in spots, sometimes you think you've read 100 pages when really it was only 20 due to how much this can drag on. This book still manages to keep you plodding along, making you wonder what's really going to happen next. Though not the greatest werewolf book out there, it's not the worst.
I'm kind of ambivalent about this book. I had trouble with Shiver as I wrote in that review "The book is told in little snippets of time, Sam's perspective, then Grace's, then Sam's, etc. A very different take on the whole werewolf and the moon scenario. I was interested enough in their dilemma to finish reading but I hope the next book is written a little differently."
Well unfortunately it was quite the same with the added perspectives of both Cole (a new suicidal werewolf) and Isabel (Grace's best friend who lost her brother to the werewolf virus). Maggie's way of writing is eloquent and simplistic. Those seem like exact opposites, but in fact, mix when Maggie does it perfectly. The book was written with such poise that it was nearly impossible for me to put it down.
This is the story of what happens after... as so many ads put it. What happens when a wrench gets thrown into your master plan you just made. A very big wrench that is made of diamond that won't snap and breaks your plan into tiny pieces. It's so hard to say anything without spoiling, but you get to meet the new werewolves. More Isabel. More Sam and Grace.
Maggie's writing style is like a good chocolate. Not like Hershey's or any cheap chocolate where it isn't smooth, but like Godiva which is smooth on the tongue and going down. Her sharp wit and humor are lovingly written in every single sentence in this book. The characters come from very pretty green ink to people I would love to meet one day.

Maggie's writing style is like a good chocolate. Not like Hershey's or any cheap chocolate where it isn't smooth, but like Godiva which is smooth on the tongue and going down. Her sharp wit and humor are lovingly written in every single sentence in this book. The characters come from very pretty green ink to people I would love to meet one day.
Another masterpiece from Mrs. Maggie
Loved it, it left off pretty close where Shiver ended. Grace starts to fade away in this story, she is slowly dying, its been 10 years or more since she was first bitten and so body is fighting itself. Sam is scared each day that his human form with disappear and become his wolf again, that's what he watched each day since he fought off the fever. Until Grace shows signs of something that is wrong, but he dont know what to do, top it all is her parents, they caught his sleeping in her bed (nothing happens) but parent just to conclusions and grounded her from seeing Sam, but hes the only one who maker her better and vise vera. Also in this book there is Cole St. Clair, famous lead singer of a rock back, is also one of the new wolves Beck from from Canada, through out this book he was brooding, wanting to escape life, thats why he was all for being turned but he found out being a wolf wasnt what he thought. He was more human most times and wolf for short or part of the time, when he was human he tried to force and stay wolf or else he was going to kill himself anyways he can. But it took seeing his long time friend dead by Isabel's father to change is life around, we got to see him break out of his self hating shell and become a man what face life not stop it. And then there is Isabel, living her life felling guilty of killing her brother Jack, but trying to understand diseases, but she can be mean and cold hearted but under all that she is scared of loosing Grace and the wolves in the woods. I am not sure but I think she wants to find a cure as must as Sam now does, to find a way to keep the wolves to stay human and not die if they haven't shifted in so long. Now I have to wait for the next book, and I can wait.
