From what I read, I'll give him credit for a comparitively well-thought out alternate world. But I found the writing, specifically character development, too shallow.
Excellent story... looking forward to reading the sequel.
For those with a taste for alternate history, (a la Harry Turtledove), Steven Barnes' "Lion's Blood" is a look at what might have happened if the tables were turned in the Old South. If Rome had been overcome by Egypt and African nations, who would have been the civilized countries? In this book, North America has been colonized by African nations, and the south is Islamic and African ruled. And, to complete the picture, slaves are white Europeans, shipped in from Western Europe and the British isles.
If you enjoy "What if?" and history turned around, this is an excellent read.

Excellent alternate history.
Another out of tune instrument on the alternate American history bandwagon.
