I liked the story here and I liked that the woman didn't have to be virginal! :) I didn't however think the other characters were expanded on very well, especially since there is supposed to be a series of these books. I will read the rest and hope they improve.

Wow, the author has finally written a book that was disappointing to me. This offered a humdrum storyline with flat, one-dimensional characters.

I really liked this unconventional post-Regency, early Victorian-era story of Gideon Pearsall and Judith, Lady Chester, a widow. He's 32 and she's 30; both have vowed never to marry again. But it seems this couple was struck by a "lightening bolt." I look forward to the next book in this series.

I have all of the books in this series on my TBR. And since I really, REALLY need to trim my TBR, somewhere in the back of my mind I was hoping that I wouldn't like this book and could take the entire series off my TBR.
Well, for the first 100 pages or so, it looked like I might get my wish. This is one of those books where the hero and heroine fall into bed first, and fall into love later. Even though there was lust aplenty in those first hundred pages, I wasn't feeling the passion. And the witty banter seemed .... forced. But then their emotions FINALLY got involved in the story and both characters started to seem much more human. I devoured the rest of the book and can't wait to finish the rest of the series.

One of my first books by this author. I enjoyed it enough to continue reading this series. I enjoyed the fact that Judith was able to take more "liberties" than a woman of this time period is normally allowed however I disliked all the "baggage" she brought with her.

This book probably just restored my faith in romance novels. I've been really bitter towards them lately because the main characters are always so predictable and the plots have holes large enough to fall into. Not so with this story!
Both characters are likeable and witty. They have a very unconventional relationship which makes the romance interesting. And the plot of the book takes up more of the pages than the sex scenes. There were two or three really good steamy ones, but the rest of the book focuses on the plot, not just describing lush curves and throbbing members. Many other romance novels seem to skip the plot and just write really uncomfortable sex.
A few downfalls - I liked each character individually but wasn't quite sure what they saw in each other. Another question I had was, if Judith had been so discreet with her previous relationships, how is it everyone and their sister seems to know about them, to the point of having wagers on how long her relationship with Gideon will last? Also, the author uses the expression "adventure" to the point of silliness.
But still, it is a very good unconventional romance novel. I definitely look forward to reading more in the series!

I really liked this book. It has a very different plot. About three chapters in to the book, I couldn't figure out how the author would be able to sustain the readers interest. Then the book got really good! This book is very recent, publish date 2007.

I was interested in reading this story after the back said she was a little bit naughty. Victoria Alexander keeps an interesting reign on her story, with picturesque phrases so this was a fun quick read.
Enjoyable read, a fun ending.
This was a good book. different than i normally read due to the fact that the female character is widowed and not a damsel in distress. all and all good book though.
I wasn't a big fan of this book.
Not my favorite VA story, but it really does redeem itself in the end. I still laughed through the whole book!
Loved it!
I found this book very entertaining. The dialog between characters was great and funny. I also found the game on who would get married very fun. It was fun watching each man go down. There are 4 books in the series and all of them are good.

Who will be the last unmarried man standing? Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton, one of the quartet of gentlemen wagering they will be the last one to marry, hadn't met Judith, Lady Chester, yet. Is it possible to be a little bit wicked and still follow your heart?

I read books of every kind of story, but once in while you need to read a good Victorian romance and Victoria Alexanders are just about the best in this category. Makes a good break between the heavy stuff!
A wonderful tale of 2 people hurt by love and afraid to trust again; until they meet the one true love of their lives.

In 1854 London, four titled gentlemen make a bet: the last man to avoid the inevitable trap of marriage wins an expensive bottle of brandy-as well as his precious freedom, for as long as necessity will allow. The first to face his trial is Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton, who lost his heart years ago to a conniving woman who briefly married him to make another lover jealous. Gideon firmly believes he will never love again, and the new "adventure" he's begun with Lady Judith Chester is merely that-a chance for excitement, a quenching of desire. Lady Chester, for her part, feels the same. A widow whose former husband abused her in secret, Lady Chester simply wants to enjoy her freedom with a man who's merely bad, rather than controlling and cruel. But the wounds of the past have a way of catching up with the carefree lovers, conspiring to expose their real, raw feelings for each other.
No man in his right mind would want to get married, but every duke, earl, and viscount knows that a fellow must do his duty in the end. So four of London's most desirable gentlemen make a wagerthe prize going to the one who remains unwed the longest.
Gideon Pearsall, Viscount Warton, thinks he has a fair shot at winning. After all, he's managed to enjoy the favors of many a lady while resisting the parson's noose. Even when he's stopped dead in his tracks by the most scandalous woman in all of LondonJudith, Lady Chesterhe vows to have her bedded but never wedded.
Beautiful, and more than a little bit naughty, Judith has always kept herself within the bounds of respectability, even while playing by her own rules. And the experience has taught her to avoid marriage. She has no desire to resist Warton's hot kisses, and his tempting touch is impossible to ignore.
