I really liked this book. It's considered a teen book so it was a really quick read, but in the same sense, also hard to put down, so I whipped through it in just a day. I'd love to read the rest of this series.
Darren and his friend Tommy go to a secret freak show that's come to town... and that's only the very beginning of everything that's to follow...

I've had my eye on this series for a year or so, but never pulled the trigger to read it. Recently, I've started seeing the ads for the movie of this series, Vampire's Assistant, which I think uses the first three books for it's story. So, since it's October and I wanted a macabre book to read, and the book is really short with a big typeface, I picked this up to read. And I loved it.
The world Shan creates is very fun. I like his take on vampires which, honestly, have become almost overexposed lately (thank you Stephanie Meyer). This book is very light, but very dark and fun. The characters are interesting and this entire book is a good setup for the whole concept. Definitely give this book a try.
I recently started Book 2, and it's just as good. Funnily enough, the first two pages are a perfect summary for Book 1. So if you want, you really could start with Book 2 as you get a nice little summary of this book in the first two pages. However, Book 1 is so light and fun I say read it. I finished it in 2 days without really even trying.

I have read every book in this series, and am so sorry it ended. They are considered "young adult" books and so are quick & easy to read, but still very compelling and suspenseful. I couldn't read them fast enough! This is book one in the series and its a great vampire story. Very different from most of the paranormal vampire stuff available right now.

Perfect reading for an 11-year old boy who needs a little encouragement to read. Good and gory, he'll definitely get into this series. I love to read though (duh), and I also enjoyed it. It's a good story, a quick read for an adult and fun if you like vampire books. Make sure you have a few on hand though, because they do go quickly and you'll want to have the next one available, especially when you see your son actually reading and enjoying it!
this was a fast read, very interesting and i truly enjoyed it.... now to get the rest of the series : )
I have to say I did not like this book like I thought I would!? I realize it is targeted for teens but it is a very dark story. Yes I realize that it was supposed to be like that; but, this touches (albiet briefly) too sensitive subjects!!

I loved this whole series, they made a movie kind of pushing a few of the books in but no where near as great as the books, as usual. These books are a young adult reading genre, however at 40 years old, I was entranced into every book that he brought out. You can not put these books down, he has that writers way of grabbing you by the throat and holding you in the air and daring you to put the book down, you know your gonna miss something, you...must....read...on... These books rocked no matter what age you are, you will be hooked till the end. Another point of interest is that after you read this series, Darren Shan continued the series but not with Darren but with **SPOILER**the vampire that we grow to love and lost in the series, the next series is almost a prequel to these. Anyway, start here with book 1 and keep going, there will be no disappointments.

It was not what I thought it would be.
