Another riveting outing from Box and his Joe Pickett series. Box has become my favorite thriller writer and his books just seem to get better and better. I've read all of his previous works including the Pickett series and his Cassie Dewell/Cody Hoyt series. All of them have been exciting page-turners in the crime/suspense genre.

In this one, someone shoots at the local judge from very long range, killing his wife instead. Joe gets involved with a task team to try to find the shooter when the judge requests him personally to be included. The team is told by the judge to identify anyone who may have had a grudge against him and it turns out that there is a long list. Then the county prosecutor also gets targeted by the shooter as he was driving his vehicle. So who has a grudge against both? Can it be the Mexican cartel who were involved in a shootout on the courthouse steps in the last novel? But then Joe's friend Nate Romanowski gets arrested for the crime by the new sheriff in town who turns out to be totally incompetent. Joe must then work doubly hard to try to clear Nate's name.

This was really a super thriller with Box throwing in several twists that keep you guessing up till near the end. There are also some good subplots involved including an unprovoked grizzly attack that Joe was investigating when he got called into the shooting investigation. High recommendation for this and any other novel by Box. But now I have the long wait until his next one is published... :(

Typical Joe Pickett , a series that consistantly gets better throughout the years. A great family man and Game Warden, who describes Wyoming as a place I would like to visit. His best friend Nate and his falcons are so interesting and now he wants to hire Joe's oldest daughter as his apprentice.

The cunning twists, interesting plot and lots of action make his books hard to put down. Looking forward to the next one.

I zipped right through this newest Joe Pickett novel. Almost all the usual charactes are there, along with a couple new ones I expect we'll see again. I always like when Joe and Nate work together, and Marybeth doing investigations behind the front line is even better. Lots of action, couple of really bad guys, that's all good. The sniper bit at the beginning was very cool, the gun talk also cool. But it's best to get caught up in the action and not dwell on the details because if you start thinking about it there are an awful lot of unbelievable moments, and I'm not just talking about the plot (still can't figure out what the grizzly subplot was about). Box does wrap it up in a massive hurry right at the end. Enjoy it as escapist fare.
