I have signed up for our town library's summer reading program and one of the activities that they have is Summer Reading Bingo. I normally only read books by John Grisham or any Amish Fiction so I am looking for recommendations on the following genre for someone who has never read them as an adult.: Mystery Classic Romance (I don't like things where the characters spend most of their time in bed if you know what I mean) Diverse Author A book set in Vermont Beach Read Science Fiction Fantasy Audiobook Graphic Novels Non Fiction Adventure/Action Poetry Thriller Biography Bestseller Historical Fiction Magic Based on a true story |

I read a lot of different books but not sure my tastes would match yours but will throw out some thoughts. Thriller or maybe Adventure/Action--I really like the Gray Man series by Mark Greaney and he is still writing books for this series. A little different Thriller/Action series I also like is Thomas Perry's Jane Whitefield series. Not sure on Diverse Author but one I read earlier this year & thought was a really good read, is Lauren Hough, Leaving Isn't the Hardest Thing: Essays. It is about her life growing up in a cult and joining the Army during don't ask, don't tell as a lesbian. And her struggles in life after that. Also I guess fitting Diverse Author but also Non-Fiction is Ronan Farrow's Catch and Kill about his investigation of mostly Harvey Weinstein but also the issues in getting it aired/in print. Ronan is gay and is mentioned in book but more of a sideline to a great read about his investigation. As far as classics, my favorites are Russian novels--War and Peace, Anna Karenina and The Brothers Karamazov. For Mystery, I would think the Sue Grafton alphabet series would work if you haven't read that. I was in high school in the 1980s so was a nice throwback kind of read where Kinsey had to find pay phones and checking & sending out mail/letters, etc. A fun series. A true story one I read a few months ago, The Sun Does Shine: How I Found Life and Freedom on Death Row by Anthony Ray Hinton. Those are what came up with right now, if need more suggestions or questions, let me know. Good luck with your Summer Reading Bingo! |

Adventure/Action The Blonde Identity by Ally Carter Fantasy. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Moss or The City We Became by N. K. Jemison (definitely do this one on audiobook) Diverse author. The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon and Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds (excellent on audio, read by the author, and it is short) Sci-Fi Try Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card Classic Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (I've read this one three times, once as a teen, once as a mother and last time on audiobook as a senior citizen.) One that I read last year, and loved was The Pantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. It is funny, a lot of word play. If you can get a copy of the 50th anniversary edition, I liked the extra content on how the author and illustrator worked on this book, that story is funny, too.) Magic Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (the first in the series) by J. K. Rowling. ( I remember really liking this on audiobook) Thriller I don't read thrillers, but I remember that I could not put this one down... Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn ( this was a book club pick a few years back!) Historical fiction Doc by Maria Doria Russell, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford, and Half Broke Horses by Jeanette Wall Based on a true story The Promise by Beth Wiseman Some of these titles would work for romance and some would work for bestsellers. I don't have a favorite in Sci-Fi category, but the one that I listed above is one that I have read, and it is a classic. Historical fiction and non fiction are my go to reads. Come back and let us know how you liked our picks! Last Edited on: 7/15/24 12:16 PM ET - Total times edited: 7 |
