This is actually two books in one. The author started writing a book about a young girl from the 1800's who died at a very young age. But the drama and chaos surrounding her son started to overwhelm her, and she started writing about him, who she was losing to drugs. So in a way, it was about 2 lost children, born many years apart. I actually was more interested in the research and people she met while looking for information about Mary, the young girl who had died. A lot of the information she found was really interesting. The problems with her son were severe, and reading about his struggles was difficult.I can't imagine the heartache she went through, but both parts of the book kept me riveted.

A very complicated book. It was difficult to read in parts because of both the drama and reality of the situation.
Ms. Myerson is very brave to have shared her story. So many parents hide their children's problems out of embarrassment or pain.
The book was well-written, and is very important.
