If you're new to sci-fi and fantasy, you'll like this book. But if you've read a lot (like me) this will seem like the same-old same-old that you've seen done better before. Once upon a time I loved Alan Dean Foster, but I haven't enjoyed any of his recent books. I wonder if it's him changing or me changing? Perhaps I should go back and reread the Spellsinger series...

My husband and I really enjoyed the entire series even though we both read totally different types of books. He is into hardcore SciFi and I read historical fiction; however we both really liked the books. You really need to get all three books though because they are necessary to understanding the whole story. The books would have made a good single novel. One thing we particularly like is the fact that the books do not spend an inordinate amount of time reiterating the previous books to help a person understand what is going on. Often when you read a second or third novel the author wastes a great deal of time going over the facts from earlier books in the series so they will 'stand alone'. These books touch on the previous ones but don't restate the entire story. The books are written on two levels and the humor is subtle and intriguing. In summary, the books are well worth reading and easy to read. The first and third books are the best of the three, the second not so much, but it is necessary to understanding the entire story. The last book ties the story up well and in my husband's opinion is the best. Since he is the expert on SciFi, I will defer to him. We both recommend the books.

Very strange, but oddly compelling.
Not the best Foster out there, but still an entertaining story.
As is usual for Foster, the main character is rudely pulled out of his life and thrust into an unusual situation (commodities trader is kidnapped by aliens, meets a talking dog along the way). This appears to be the first book in a possible series. It was a good read, with good (not great) Foster humor along the way. All in all a good book, but not among my favorites of Foster's. Frankly, I need more space for the books I do love, so I want to pass this one along.

What a fun read! An exotic team of characters that have to work together against all odds to escape captivity by an alien species intent upon selling them for profit. This is the first of a trilogy, but wraps up well enough that it isn't urgent to read the next.
Another young hero' like Foster's Flinx---with a friend and a talent for making interesting other friends. But this young man's best friend is actually a dog rather than a mini-dragon, and the new friends he makes... well they aren't the usual run of the mill fellows, either...
