This novel was written in 1986, and it has the feel of being dated. It is, however, still a well-written and readable novel about the coming out of a young gay man at the same time as his closeted father. My one big complaint: the character of Jerene is totally superfluous.
While at times this feels just a tad bit dated, the characters are wonderfully written and feel very much alive.
Wonderful novel about family... what we know and what we choose to ignore.
Nicely written but there are too many characters, some of which I didn't care about. The aspect of being gay in NYC during the AIDs epidemic was just a vague footnote and I was surprised it didn't dominate parts. The journey of the parents was interesting and I thought could have been fleshed out more, and the ending was a bit abrupt and leaves the reader to decide what happens to the main characters.
I found it to be a rather slow read, but it had its moments where it really grabbed your attention.
