A fascinating combination of Chinese history and culture combined with Troost's personal experiences, both horrifying and hilarious, traveling through China. His initial quest is to find a place where he could move with his wife and two young boys, which made this work particularly interesting to me. (Incidentally, he decided that he couldn't justify moving them to such a polluted nation.)
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that it didn't make me laugh out loud nearly as often as "The Sex Lives of Cannibals."

this book disapointed me, I travel to HK and China for work and i wanted to get a better understanding about the country- this book just left me depressed. the pollution and the people sounded awful, i'm not saying it is not that way, only that the book made me sad about the state of China and what they are doing to earth and environment. after 150 pages, i had to put it down.

An interesting read, but not as good as his first 2 books.

OK, this author is not Bill Bryson (my favorite), but he is funny and informative at the same time. I learned allot about China from this book too, and it is not what I thought it was. My daughter goes to China several times a year for work (Shanghai) and now I am going to worry about her more than normal.... it seems that China is good and bad at the same time, as is it's leadership. If you like Bill, you'll also like this book. I did order another book from this author and hope I like it as well as this one.

I have enjoyed Marteens other books. This book was very interesting until about halfway through. By the end of the book his trip became tiresome. I enjoyed learning things about China that only an intense visitor could share. But it just became a tedious trip.
