Marie is a sheltered high school student who is on track to be Valedictorian of her class. Her life trajectory is altered when she becomes pregnant on a church-sponsored mission trip to Mexico. Because of the pregnancy, she abandons her plans to go to Yale, and marries the father of the baby instead. She takes a job at The Olive Garden, and works her way up to a well-paying job at an expensive steak house.

Along the way, she becomes caught up in the drug and sex-fueled culture of restaurant work, and her personal life comes apart at the seams as even as she works her way up in the restaurant world.

Reading this book feels like watching a train wreck, but the writing is so good that you can't look away. There is a lot of drug use, but the descriptions are very mild compared to the sexual scenarios Marie finds herself in. This is a fascinating, though completely unenjoyable and depressing story.
