I never thought I would like reading vampire novels...but lo and behold the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series came along and I was hooked.
This is the story of Bella (she has a cameo in the previous novel, Lover Eternal) and Zsadist, the most troubled of the Warriors in the Brotherhood. Bella upon meeting Zsadist feels an instant connection with him, even though he is horribly scarred on his face. She seeks him out in the previous novel, but he pushes her away not wanting to taint her with his unworthy presence. Zsadist is a former slave and doesn't feel that he is worthy of Bella who is an aristocrat amongst her species. With Bella being kidnapped Zsadist must start owning up to the feelings he has for Bella and fight for her with external enemies as well as the enemies dwelling in his soul. The battle with the evil Lessers is escalating and the Brotherhood needs to be strong now more than ever.
So far this is my favorite of the series, I haven't read the next three books but you can bet I'm going to. Zsadist is a character that makes you want to reach out to help and Bella is a strong woman who will go to any lengths to save her man. There were a few moments towards the end that actually brought a tear to my pathetic little eyes (I cry during commercials too). This is a must read for vampire/romance novel fans.

Absolutely great book. So well written. If you've read the first 2 this one just ties the unity of the brotherhood together in a warm family way. It has the slaying and everything that goes with vampire books that makes them great but also has a warmth to it that just pulls you in to the bond that these characters share and the sadness that they experience is written so well that you feel it like you experienced it yourself. There are also new characters added for hopefully future books. There were times I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what would happen next and times where I didn't want to turn the page because I didn't want to know.

Please do not miss the opportunity to read one of the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. I am absolutely hooked on this series. Vampire books are a dime a dozen right now, but I guarantee you that you will not read another one like this. And believe me, Zhadist is a character unlike any you will find in any romance novel. Listen to what all the other reviewers say as well, and read this book - then go back and read the two before and the one after. And there's more coming!!

Zsadist's story is so far the most moving. In the series so far, we've seen Zsadist, through everyone else's eyes, as someone to be feared. In Lover Awakened we see him as someone who fears. He just hides it behind a tough as nails exterior. Bella is fascinated by Zsadist though she can't be sure why. Even when Zsadist keeps pushing her away, she comes right back at him with all the love she can give. Zsadist's story is truly amazing and there were several parts that just sent shivers down my spine.
The plot line continues with the war against the lessers and J.R. Ward does not make that war seem like a walk through a meadow. There are losses on both sides; some insignificant, others absolutely heartbreaking. I cannot reccomend this series enough to people. It's fantastic!

BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD #3: Romantic Times, Top Pick - Love this series.
When it comes to tormented heroes, few can top the dangerous and tortured Zsadist. In a change of pace, it's the hero who has sexual issues resulting from his violently abusive past as a blood slave. Both the hero and heroine have suffered greatly, but it's Zsadist's journey to self-acceptance that makes this book so compelling. Ward pulls no punches in this dark, dangerous and at times tragic series. Waiting for successive installments is getting harder and harder.

Deeply scarred without and within, vampire warrior Zsadist believes that he is unworthy of either compassion or true love. Zsadist can't rest until he finds Bella, and once he does, he faces his biggest threat to date as fate grants him one last chance at peace. Ward spins her take on Beauty and the Beast into a raw, gritty tour de force, creating an array of ugliness and beauty, pain and pleasure in a tale that sparks enough plot stunners to keep readers fascinated.

This is the best paranormal romance I have ever read. This series just keeps getting better. I wasn't too impressed with the first book of the series, but the second one hooked me. The third one is the best so far. If you love a tortured hero, this book is for you. They do not come any more tortured than Zsadist. Each book has the battle of good vs evil and romance/love triumphing... This one has a special twist to it from book 1 that was a THRILL to read! A character returns! (Have to keep it cryptic so I don't ruin it! :))
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!

Oh my, the darkest and scariest brother has the furthest to go if he is going to accept the love of Bella. I thought Bella's story would have been a little more evolved given what she went through, but the relationship between the brothers remains the core focus of this series. I experienced some anxiety trying to figure which twin Bella would end up with. Also missed some of John's story when his new family is torn asunder, perhaps later. This series rocks! Solid recommendation.

I can admit based on the first two books Z was my least favorite of the brotherhood, although occasionally I found myself wondering if he was not just acting so nasty because everyone expected him to especially in book 2 but I just could not connect with him. I think that is however what was intended we were not supposed to like him, until his book.
Lover Awakened is a great book, it is well written and it truly gives you understanding on why Z is the way he is, we get his full story the abuses he took were well beyond the realm of only being a blood slave. I cried for him, and I cried for other things as well but I will not put them in my review because they are spoilers. Z pushes so hard for Bella to prefer the un-broken brother his brother Phury, but she refuses. There is angst as always, but in the end the right thing happens at the right time. Z truly comes to be whole to take his place among the Brotherhood and be more than a killer, he truly becomes a warrior.
By the end of this book I had fully changed my my mind on Z, while he won't replace my favorite just yet of Rhage he is now loved by me. Well done it is not often I go from absolutely not liking a character to making me love them.
I still do not like the lessers I get why they are there but they bore me. John Matthew is going to be great once we get into his full story and bless Butch for his pinning, though I wonder what V did to him, I bet you do now too.

Zsadist & Bella is the story in book three of Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Zsadist is a former love slave and bears the scars of years of pain and humiliation. Among the Brothers he is know for his fury and savagery. Bella is a high-born vampire who is captured by a lesser and held prisoner for weeks. Battles rage and tempers burn as the Brothers fight the Lessening Society to protect their race from becoming extinct.

Zsadist is the scariest member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. A former blood slave, he has known a lifetime of anger and pain. But when female vampire Bella is kidnapped by the Lessening Society, Zsadist will not rest until he finds her. Zsadist rescues Bella, but we soon find out that he is the one who needs rescuing. Overcoming a past of physical and sexual abuse, Zsadist refuses to let anyone close to him. But Bella will not give up on him.
Wow! I couldn't put this book down. An incredibly tortured hero and a great heroine in the best series out there at this time. Not only do we get Bella & Zsadist's story, but we also learn more about John Matthew and Zsadist's twin brother, Phury. When you read this book, carve out some time when you won't be disturbed. This is still, in my opinion, JR Ward's best work so far.
This is third book in the series and you absolutely must read the first two to expect to follow the plot of this one. The story begins with Bella, who has been kidnapped and abused, and Zsadist who is desperate to save her. As a warrior of exceptional skill with little regard to his own safety, he succeeds-only to realize he has no idea what to do with her. As it turns out Zsadist has a tragic past that has resulted in his lack of ability to connect with people-even in something as simple as being touched. He is dysfunctional and self-hating on many levels, but his new ties to Bella begin to make him rethink his life and help him put his past behind him.
This story is raw and emotional. Ward does not shy away from the ugly and violent parts of her characters lives and personalities, so it is all the more beautiful when they find happiness despite it all.
Zsadist is oddly lovable. He isn't handsome or charming, but he is direct and loving. It's sweet to see him discover his ability to feel.
World-building seriously starts in this book as the war that the Brothers fight continues and new warriors must be trained. We also begin to get an idea of how vampire society works outside the military aspect.

Loved it!! One of my favorite books of all time. This is one of the best love stories I've ever read. It's very unconventional and not predictable. Talk about your tortured alpha vampire males. Ward handles this story with such love and care. It's obvious how much she loves the character of Zsadist. She spends so much time crafting his past as well as his growth as a mate, warrior, and brother.
This is a far more interesting and complex book than the first two books in the series though those were entertaining in their own way. This book blows those two others out of the water.
Lover Awakened is Zsadist's story. You know that someone with such a dark outlook on life must have a compelling past. And he does. It isn't easy to read all that was done to him during his subjugation as a blood/sex slave to a wealthy cruel female vampire, but you understand why he has such a hair-trigger temper and dark outlook on life. You also understand his identical twin, Phury, better too.
Zsadist isn't the vicious monster everyone thinks he is. Even his own twin thinks that Zsadist is ruined, not broken. Broken can be fixed, but not someone ruined. So not true. Zsadist is an extremely vulnerable soul with a lot to offer to the right person, but gosh you have to go through iron clad layers to make him open up. He resists every step of the way. The last 30 pages of the book are so moving and absolutely amazing. I cried (and I hardly ever cry over a book) when I got to the end. It was a very satisfying end. Zsadist is my favorite character from the series.
There is an incredibly sad event that happens to a strong secondary character. It's something that will carry on in the books to come.

Totally blown away by this one. Zsadist in the first two books is one scary SOB, but there are glimpses of a humanity that he hides away well. Learning about all that he went through and what was done to him not only physically but psychologically and emotionally was heart wrenching, but was a necessary evil to understand why he is the way he is, and to see him progress as the story unfolds is awsome. I really liked Bella, from the first moment she met him, she saw him, not the scars or the attitude, but him. Being captured by the lessers and tortured gave her a connection with Z and she turned to him so she could heal.
The interaction with all the Brothers and their shellans always makes the books for me ~ their banter back and forth with each other is highly enjoyable. and my heart did ache for Phury, Z's twin. Totally enjoying learning more and more about John Mathews and can't wait to get to his book. J.R. Ward also threw in a curve ball in this book, and although I was totally surprised and heartbroken, I am looking forward to seeing how she works it out for this character ~ who has been one of my favs from book 1.

I was not a big fan of Zsadist and the beginning of this book just reinforced how I felt about him - cold, callous, and unfeeling...downright mean and hurtful. But then as I got closer to the end of the book and found out more about his past, I came to truly fall in love with his character and hope that there will be more stories about Zsadist and Bella in the future. This book did not fail to deliver in any way; the series continues to keep you wanting more and more. Unlike other series that seem to die out as the books progress.

I love all the black dagger brothers, But Zadist is my favorite, Abducted as a child and forced to be a bloodslave. He is scarred in body, mind and soul. He cannot even bare to be touched until Bella come into his life and then is taken by the vampires mortal enemies,Zadist makes it his mission to find her or at least make as many Lessers pay as possible. he wants Bella but thinks his twin would be better for her. The scenes where he is remembering his life as a slave are heart breaking to read. But make you love him all the more. This is one of my all-time favorite books.

This series is a must read in order type of series. We see Bella and Z meet in book 2 and their story flourishes in this book. Bella is as strong and determined to have Z as Z is to keep her at a distance. The clash of passion and stubbornness makes for a great story.

THIS WHOLE SERIES IS FANTASTIC. YOU CANT WAIT TO GET THE NEXT ONE. THEY ARE SO GOOD, NOT JUST THE SUPERNATURAL PART BUT THE LOVE STORY AS WELL. YOU CAN PICTURE EVERYTHING IN YOUR MIND IT IS WRITTEN SO WELL.
By far my favorite in the series. I've read the series straight-through twice now and on my most recent (third) reading, I'm ready to quit after this book. It is the highlight and the peak of the series. The other books are good and if you are a new reader to Black Dagger Brotherhood, don't let my comments stop you. They are all great and worth reading. But this one is the best.
Zhadist and Bella have amazing chemistry and such an apparently insurmountable pile of problems keeping them apart. They both have to overcome so many emotional and psychological encumbrances, they are really the perfect couple - him with incredible physical strength, her with incredible emotional strength. The chemistry between them is sizzling and Bella's "needing" is something else. It's sexy and sweet and emotional all at once. Even reading it the third time, some of this book is just so heartwrenching.

I just love all of the Black Dagger Brothers. This book doesn't disappoint.
Awesome! You know the fantasy books where the auther makes up new vocabulary and you are left in the dark trying to figure out what he/she is talking about- and of course if there is a glossary it is in the back and you don't see it till you are done with the book! Ward puts her glossary of terms in the front, telling me that these are important to know. It helped out a lot. The stories are awesome to but I won't tell you anything you can't read on the back! Highly recommend if you are into paranormal romance.
Great Book!!! I know a lot of people love Z but I kind of got really tired of his insecurity to have sex. Still a great book but not my favorite. The love scenes were awkward. Still, a very good story.
Surprisingly this wasn't my favorite. I haven't read Vishious's story yet but I've read all the others. I loved Bella because she isn't afraid to go after what she wants. Zsadist was a disappointment to me. If I was Bella I would have kicked his butt for trying to pawn me off on everyone else. He played the martyr too muchand I ended up losing a lot of respect for the character. He did eventually get better so that was nice.
The writing itself was slow to start but it picked up one-third of the way through the book. Then I couldn't put it down. I usually hate the lessers' scenes but I liked what Ward to with Mr. O. I especially found his obsession with Bella intriguing.
I did find myself so much more interesting in all the other characters of the book than Zsadist and Bella. Regardless I would highly recommend the series. They are a fun read.

I love how Z has developed into a lovable character. This book was less erotic than the previous 2 because it delt with Z's fight with himself. I really enjoyed it. And it had a surprising twist at the end!
A must read series. Loved it!!!
Could not put it down.
What can I say about this series. WOW!!!! Zhadist, love him. So far I love all the guys in this series. However Zhadist is probably the one that is the most tortured. Who does not love the tortured hero!!! Come on ladies if you have not started this series go to the bookstore, library, or e-books and get it. You will NOT be disappointed. Thanks to my Goodreads friend Toni for turning me on to this series.

I love this book, I just read it a second time and it didn't loose it's appeal one bit. I was lost in the story even though i knew what's coming. Well written, rounded characters, & interaction between Bella & Zsadist is great. It's the best in this series.
Zsadist is one of the most tragic characters I have ever read about. He is misunderstood by those around him, even by his own twin brother, to the point of being thought of as a monster. But Bella sees something else in him, and she is his much needed salvation. Out of all of the Brotherhood books (and I love them all), this is my favorite! To be as hurt and damaged as he is, and still to be able to finally open himself; it was truly beautiful to read. I recommend all of the books in this series - all of the Brothers are amazing men - but of them all, Zsadist stole my heart.
I have read this book at least a dozen times. It is one of the best books ever. If you love a fairy tale with a twist you got it. Zadist is my favorite brother!!!
The Black Dagger Brotherhood series is wickedly addictive! Super steamy and not for the young at heart, this is the story of Zsadist and Bella. First introduced to Bella in the second book, Lover Eternal, she is kidnapped by lessers. Zsadist is obsessed with finding Bella and annihilating those responsible for her demise. Even though Zsadist continues to turn away from Bella, she will not give up on her love for him. Before he can return any love to her completely, Zsadist must come to terms with his own demons.

I have to say that so far the third book in this series is my favorite. The characters seem to be more dimensional and the author does not shy away from controversial subjects (sexual abuse). Would definitely recommend this book and am looking forward to reading the fourth book.

Loved it! Z was my favorite member of the Brotherhood from the very beginning and I wasn't disappointed by his story. Fast paced, good action, and I can't wait to get started on Butch's story!
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, a deadly turf war rages between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other--six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Of these, Zsadist is the most terrifying member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.
A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Renowned for his unquenchable fury and sinister deeds, he is a savage feared by humans and vampires alike. Anger is his only companion and terror his only passion--until he rescues a beautiful female from the evil Lessening Society.

My favorite of the first 4 books! I may be biased because Z is my favorite character. ;)
" I was dead until you found me, though I breathed. I was sightless, though I could see. And then you came...and I was awakened." -quote from Lover Awakened by: J.R. Ward
That quote pretty much sums up the entire book. Zsadist, a brother of the Black-Dagger Brotherhood" was ruined from a long and horrible stint as a blood slave. When he met Bella his entire world flipped over, and he started to realize what it meant to live.
This book is also one of my favorites, though it is not my favorite of this series. There is so much going on in this book, we lose a strong secondary character, and then a main character disappears. It was tragic and I balled my eyes out. This book will make you laugh, cry, and totally hot in just a few short chapters. Oh, and this is the steamiest book of the series in my opinion. Be warned.

Even as their desire for each other begins to overtake them, Zsadist's thirst for vengeance against Bella's tormentors drives him to the brink of madness. This is the kind of book you can't put down and then wish you had taken longer to read it. I am posting four of this series and eagerly looking for Lover Unbound. PS This is book 3 of the series.

This is the third installment in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and in this story we learn more about Zsadist. As an infant, he was stolen by a nursemaid and sold to be the blood slave of another woman. His twin, Phury, set out to find and rescue him once hed gone through the transformation into adult vampire.
The story continues from Bellas kidnapping and Zsadists determination that he will be the one to rescue her and then avenge her kidnapping. He does rescue her and brings her to the Brotherhoods compound and insists that only he can care for her. He does not want her to leave the compound, even though her aristocratic family wants her back home with them.
The thing is, Bella wants to be with Zsadist, but his past is stopping him from allowing her to become intimate with him. He insists that she really wants his twin, Phury, and that he is too dirty to be with her.
John Matthews story continues as he has gone to live with Tohrment and Wellsie. He is enrolled in the training program for potential future members of the Brotherhood and is making friends and some enemies there. He also learns that he is, based on blood evidence, a son of Darius the queen, Beths father. (Remember the wish the Scribe Virgin granted Darius at the end of Dark Lover? I believe we have found Darius reincarnation.) But tragedy is about to strike his new found family and have devastating consequences for him.
And Butch is still pining away for Marissa. (Im really feeling for him. Seriously.)
This is one of my favorites of this series. All the background on Zsadist really makes it easier to understand why he keeps himself cut off from the rest of the world and doesnt want to open himself up to the possibilities. It also starts to develop the story about his twin, Phury, who wasnt kidnapped but was damaged by the kidnapping as well.
The segments on the lessers are still not as intriguing and worth remembering probably because they kind of keep bringing the same old bad guy back again. And the homophobic undertones with Butch and V are a bit of a turn off.
But, once again a wonderful story about the redemptive qualities of love. (Im probably the only one that sees that.)
Oh, and theres lots of sex.

20 Stars to JR Ward for the 3rd installment of the Black Dagger Brotherhood
This is the best series I have ever picked up. And especially being the 3rd in the series, I didn't think she could get any better, but I was holding my breath and flipping those pages because the story is SO intense. It sucks you in and time flies by as you are transported into another world.
Zsadist truly was beautiful as the novel came to a close, and his true colors came out to shock and awe us and make us all fall in love with him more. I was smiling through the entire book.
And I know many readers might compare Sherrilyn Kenyon's dark hunter, Zarek, with Zsadist, but they don't even come close to being anything alike.
The stories that JR Ward continues to create and bring to life are SO REAL. I love how she can take a simple (or complex) character and show how deep their emotions and feelings run. She does an awsome job. I feel like I'm losing a friend, or neighbor, by the end of the book. I need to start over in the series to maintain the development of all the characters fresh in my mind, and keep them real. All the BROTHERS and their friends/enemies are so exciting.

This is the third book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood and I listened to it on audio book. The audio book was well done. This was by far my favorite book in this series. It tells the story of Zsadist and Bella. As with many other readers of this series Zsadist is by far my favorite Brother.
Zsadist is set to rescue Bella from the Lesser that kidnapped her in the end of Book 2, Lover Eternal. When he does Bella ends up in his room to heal. Zsadist can't stand to touch her or be touched by her and what follows is an uneasy recovery. As Bella heals and gains the courage to leave the Brother's House things get complicated. Zsadist and his brothers are trying to hunt down the lesser that captured Bella but aren't having much luck. As a result Bella is forced to stay longer at the Brother's House. Will Bella and Zsadist ever be able to get past Zsadist's dark past? This story is intersperse with scenes featuring John Matthews as he starts his training with the Brothers, Rehvenge is introduced more fully (Bella's brother), and Phury (Zsadist's brother) also struggles with his own issues.
This was my favorite book of the series. I love both Bella and Zsadist and loved watching them work out their substantial issues together. You spend quite a bit of time learning about Zsadist's past and it is just as brutal and horrible as you are given to believe in previous books. More than any of the couples featured in previous books Bella and Zsadist are on again, off again and really struggle with their relationship.
Both Bella and Zsadist grow substantially as characters throughout the book, I was impressed with the vast character development and was happy with how that was done. Bella has got to be one of the most gracefully persistent heroines ever, and boy can she kick butt when she sets her mind to it. I just loved her as a character. Out of all of the books so far this one had the best and most interesting love scenes too.
The plot between the Lessers and the Brotherhood is woven throughout but definitely takes a backseat to Bella and Zsadist's story. This book did jump around between characters more than previous books and at times that was really annoying because I just wanted to find out what Bella and Zsadist were doing! It was nice though to have story built up around John's character, Rehvenge's character, Butch's character, and Phury's character. The plot also had a couple of big surprises and a heart-breaker in it, so it was more engaging and entertaining than previous books.
Overall this was my absolutely favorite book in this series to date. I have a hard time seeing how Ward will top this book in future books. If you liked the previous two books, you will love this book. These are definitely romance heavy books, but there were some good fight scenes in here too. After this book I think I am going to take a little break and then pick up with the fourth book, Lover Revealed, next month. I can only take so much romance before it all seems a bit too formulaic to me. As far as romance goes these are excellent book though, and this was the best yet.

Zsadist is my fav out of all the brotherhood, and I was looking forward to reading his story. I really liked how this story also told a little more about some of the other brothers and their struggles (like how Zsadist's brother Phury is just as messed up as Z he just hides it better!). I look forward to reading more of John's story as he seems to have so much promise and I can't wait until the poor 'kid' grows into a big strong brother that he so wants to be (I always take the underdog's side, LOL). I am already halfway through with the next book in the series (the cop- Butch's story). It is a great series that I plan to keep reading.

My favorite of the series thus far! Zsadist sounds HOT, (but which of them doesn't?)! I love this series and will continue to read the rest, but has anyone else noticed how Ward asks many questions but rarely uses a question mark? I'm on the fifth book now and it's starting to get distracting. That's my only complaint, but actually I wouldn't call it a complaint as much as an observation.

So far I'd have to say that this was one of my favorite books in the series. Zsadist is a tormented soul that you can't help but love him. He was tortured for so long before being found by his brother that their's hardly anything left in him. He was left a shell and nothing his brother did could change it.
It this book you get a clear picture of what happened to Zsadist during his first century of life. He tells you from his memory exactly what was done to him and how empty and broken after having to endure it for so long. He gives with such painful clarity how he was made into a blood slave and how he was raped by men and women.
His only companion is anger, rage, and self imposed burning torture that a lack of food and blood gives him. The pain he feels let's him know he's still alive. It's how he's live for so long he doesn't know how to live without pain.
Even after meeting Bella feeling her desire for him doesn't change it. Her desire for him frightens him because he associates a females desire for him with pain and degradation. He pushes her away and want's nothing to do with her, but from the moment he touches her something changes in her. He feels protective of her so when she's taken by the lessers he can't stop searching for her or torturing those he finds until he finds her.
For the months of incarceration Bella remembers Zsadist. He's the one that helps her through this. She know's he'll find her. When a captured vampire get's loose with the help of Bella she is finally found. Unfortunately the were unable to get to her in-time to save her from the torture the lesser put her through.
With Zsadist's help she recover's physically. Mentally it takes longer. All she knows is that Zsadist was the first one she heard and so now she feels unable to survive without him. He wants to help her and he doesn't know how. How can one so scared by life help the one person who he's suppose to protect. Can they both heal one another or will his fear push her away.
