Great book. I didn't particularly like Mary in the beginning. I thought is was a little over done how much she kept pushing Rhage away, but her character turned around and grew strong and she ended up being a character I really liked. A book and a series definetly worth reading.
I thought this book was much better then the first one. I could't put it down Mary is a greate heroine! I was a little disappointed there wasn't more on Beth and Wrath, they seemed to be the characters that were on the outside of the story the most. I do like how Ward has many stories going on, Marissa and Butch are still in the background, we get to meet John, a potential future warrior, and the beginning of Bella and Z. Not to mention we know about Beth's dad from the 1st book, that is a story waiting to happen. So it's not just your typical hero and heroine, but many stories going on and all interesting. Can't wait to continue the series!

Book 2 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Rhage is the protagonist, a vampire with the strongest appetites. Cursed by the Scibe Virgin, he carries within him a power, if unleashed it threatens everyone around him. Can he avoid hurting the woman he loves if he lets her get close to him? This character agonizes and you feel it. Another great one in the series. See the other 3 posted.

Mary is a human who is suffering from leukemia which is rapidly shortening her lifespan. Rhage is a vampire warrior of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. He is cursed with the spirit of a beast which comes out when he becomes aggressive. He encounters Mary on BDB property when she is there doing a favor for a friend. He is instantly transfixed with her, and soon pursues her. They fall in love but face the problems of dealing with their emotional baggage, Mary's disease, Rhage's beast, and of course the fact that they are of different species.
Rhage is a very hot hero. He is handsome, cursed, and flawed. His love for Mary is raw and tangible. He becomes honest and self-sacrificing in a way that is truly heart breaking.
Mary is strong and easy to relate to. She is not perfect or beautiful. She has physical and emotional scars that result from her cancer and the other tragedies of her past. She learns to open up with Rhage and allows her self to be vulnerable.
The only problem I had with this was the resolution. I felt that the way Mary's disease was resolved was hastily thrown in as a means of getting to the happily ever after. The book speaks a lot about balance and sacrifice, but in the end theres not a lot of sacrifice at all. This issue is minor and does not take away a lot from the emotional effect of the story.

The second book in the series of the Black Dagger Brotherhood and I have to say the series is getting better. While I really get bored with the chapters are partial chapters on the lessers and the omega I think it may be just because I get so into the stories that the Brothers are having and do not want to be interrupted with that stuff.
Rhage was my favorite from the first book, I was eager and curious to know more about him and how he got his curse. The book did not disappoint in teaching us what happened, and how he handled his monster. That on first look Rhage is not what he appears to be. The love story of Rhage and Mary is sweet, touching and truly a joy to read. Two people with a lot of baggage learning that they do not have to carry it alone.

WOW! Loved this book, had a hard time putting it down. Rhage & Mary's story was awsome. Rhage is the brotherhoods fiercest warrior, but there is a beast within him that he cannot control and is afraid will hurt one of his brothers or an innocent. Mary is a human with a beast of her own that has reared it's ugly head and she only has so much time left. I love the way that Rhage and Mary meet and the way that the story unfolds. The chemistry between the two of them is hot and exciting, Rhage is simply drawn to her, a total understatement, and Mary is at a totally condfused as to why he would be. She puts him off as much as she can, but he is persistant. Finding out about Rhage and what is under all that "warriorness" was what hooked me. With every interaction between the characters you learn more and more about each of them and it just sucks you further and further into the world that J.R. Ward has created. I also have to admit that I tend to skim over the parts that do not have any of the brothers, or their females, involved. I can't seem to find the patience to read about the lessers.
This one is on my keeper shelf.
I do recommend reading the books in order ~ they build upon themselves as the series progresses

Within the brotherhood, Rhage is the vampire with the strongest appetite. He's the best fighter, the quickest to act on his impulses, and the most voracious lover-for inside him burns a ferocious curse cast by the Scribe Virgin.
Possessed by this dark side, Rhage fears the times when his inner dragon is unleashed, making him a danger to everyone around him. When Mary Luce is unwittingly thrown into the vampire world, she must rely on Rhage's protection. Knowing that Mary feels the same intense animal attraction, Rhage must make her his alone...

A great follow up to "Dark Lover." I would recommend reading the series in order. I didn't so I know the next book is probably the one filled with heartache but I still look forward to reading it.
The action was fast paced and Mary was a great protagonist. I noticed Ward's love and violent scenes were more detailed compared to the first book. Mary had a lot of guts even though some it was false bravado. I really liked her character and could really understand why she was pushing Rhage away. Rhage was such a cry baby but adored him still since he was such a sweetheart. I enjoyed that Rhage actually wanted a relationship and was doing the pursuing. Also there were great introductions to Z and Bella (next book) and John (the possible reincarnation of Darius).
Things I disliked about the book was Ward's inconsistency in dialogue. Sometimes the characters are overly street or ghetto when they took then they are super eloquent. Not sure the street talk really add to it and thought it would be better if Ward chose one and stuck to it. Also the scenes with the Lessers are still a little boring but I think they have improved compared to the first book.
Overall a great series and well worth the read.

Re-reading the entire series and I liked this book BETTER the second time than the first. Knowing what happens later in the series with the core characters of this story (Rhage and Mary) and also with Zsadist, Belle, Phury, Butch, John Matthew and Vhishious makes the story all the more delicious. I loved Rhage more this time, Mary's appeal was stronger and their love story more believable to me. As with the previous book, however, I was able to easily skip every section with the Lessers without any interruption to the narrative. I think the Lessers story takes away from the action and it is my one quibble with J.R. Ward. Even in first reading, when I got to the last couple of books, I only skimmed the sections about the Lessers.

Great follow up to Dark Lover. I think this is a better book than Dark Lover, but Dark Lover was good enough that I decided to get hooked on this series. This is an incredibly addictive series. The writing, the plots, the way each vampire character is developed is better than any other romance or vampire series I've read. Ward has a way of creating situations and characters that are very appealing to most women. It's like she read my mind. I wouldn't mind being a female character in one of these books.
Lover Eternal is about another vampire in the secret Black Dagger Brotherhood. The Brotherhood exists to protect the lives of vampires who are being hunted by soulless humans called Lessers. The vampires aren't your sparkly Twilight series vampires. Neither are they the type that live in coffins and drink from humans. The vampires in the Black Dagger world are sophisticated, urban, cultured, and very very sexy. They drink from each other when they need to feed. Must say the drinking scenes are quite sexy too.
In Lover Eternal, the lives of Mary, a human, and Rhage, a warrior vampire, intersect. He is absolutely gorgeous, but what I loved was his silly light-hearted personality. There was such a sweetness to him. I could see why she kept pushing him away. She's not in his league as far as looks, plus she has nothing much to offer someone so full of life and health. His curse (no, it's not being a vampire) comes between them and threatens their relationship.
The sex in the book is unbelievably hot - it's sizzling. *fans self* He is an amazingly considerate partner. Call me Rhage...call me! ;)

I love this book...it is one of my all time favorites, Ward writes with such conviction for each of these characters, they seem without a doubt real. Rhage and Mary are absolutely perfect together, nothing like the ladies man being brought down by the women who is no where near his type. There is also a very heavy plot line here that continues from the first book "Dark Lover", and it is excellent. We see a new character introduced here, who is one of my favorites as the series progresses, and also say good by to a strong secondary character. You will mourn with the brothers for her loss, trust me, I cried. Don't miss this one, its excellent. I liked this one a lot, but it is not my favorite of the series, if you can believe it.

Lover Eternal is book 2 in the black dagger brotherhood series by JR Ward the pen name of jessica bird who is known for her harlequin romances and books alike. after reading these books i dont know if ill be a complete mainstream addict as i was.
Lover Eternal tells the Story of Rhage, the strongest of the brotherhood and the most lethal . Over a century ago he was punished for his behavior by being cursed with a dragon with him that is released when his rage and emotions can no longer be controlled . a strong weapon when defeated the lessers as not a trace of them are left behind. Lessers are their arch enemy and in turn the are both trying to destroy the other team .
Rhage's love interest is Mary, a full blood human who turns out to have a return of her fight with leukemia once again. due to her being human he has to feed from a female of the chosen ones. She brings out the best and the worst in him. He tries to stay away from her for he fears that the beast within will be released and harm her.
Can he save mary and keep the beast from her? is the beast really a danger or is he worrying for nothing?

I am officially in love with The Black Dagger Brotherhood! Book 2 was more complex and involved than Book 1 which is a good thing. Lover Eternal is Rhage's story. When Rhage was younger, he was careless and used his killer good looks to get what he wanted. One day Rhage went too far and infuriated the Scribe Virgin. He was cursed for 200 years.
Mary Luce is a woman living on borrowed time. She has lukemia and it's come back with a vengence. When she and Rhage first meet Rhage is instantly attracted to her. Mary thinks her friend Bella has set the two up together because she is dying. Needless to say when they go for their first date, it's pretty interesting.
I had a hard time figuring out how the author was going to make a human-vampire relationship work, but she did. I'll admit I had a hard time finishing the book because I wasn't 100% sure what was going to happen. This is a great book and so far a great series. It's made me a believer in vampires!

Rhage is my favorite characters so far!! I am really starting to hate the Scribe Virgin even more than the first book. I was really surprised at the twist at the end of the book because I read some of the reviews. I was pleasantly surpised.

I am in love with the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series. Once you pick up each book it's impossible to set them down. I find myself needing to get the next book immediately, learning what is happening in the lives of the Brothers, intrigued how each chapter unfolds.
Truly these books are worth taking a look at:
Dark Lover, Lover Eternal, Lover Awakened, Lover Revealed, Lover Unbound, Lover Enshired.
Happy Reading

Rhage and lollipops!
I craved this brother and his book from the moment he stepped onto the scene in Dark Lover. Thankfully the wait wasn't long, and it is still by far my favorite.
The book gives us a great insight into the brotherhood, the relationships they have with each other, and the value they put on their mates.
There is more of the BEAST, which I love just as much as Mary does. There is John, who turns out to be a major part of the story. Then there is Z. and Bella.

I loved this book. After reading the first book in this series, I was excited to continue on in the series and I wasn't disappointed. The world that J.R. Ward has created is entrancing. The Black Dagger Brotherhood is amazing.
Lover Eternal is the story of Rhage. He is, of course, as dreamy as the rest of the brotherhood. I love the way the author presents these men as big and tough except when it comes to their women. I love it! Mary is the female in this story and she is one tough cookie. It is so nice to see a female represented as strong and beautiful. I found that this storyline was a bit slower than the first book, but it was great all the same. I highly recommend this series!

This is the second book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and follows the story of Rhage aka Hollywood. Rhage is Hollywood good looking, thus the nickname. Women practically throw themselves at him and thats good thing, because he has a 200 year curse thats given him an inner demon that can only be tamed with sex or fighting. If the demon is let loose, there is no stopping him and he will destroy all in his path, friend or foe.
The story opens with Butch unsuccessfully trying to pursue a relationship with Marissa. And, Vishous, who is psychic telling Rhage that he is going to meet his love and she will be a virgin. Rhage finds this to be a bit unbelievable especially given his penchant for having random sexual encounters.
Mary Luce nursed her faithful, Catholic mother through a fatal illness, survived leukemia and now works for a law office and volunteers at a suicide help line. Shes just received a phone call from her doctor that they want to do some follow up testing and shes sure that the leukemia is back. That night, after leaving her shift at the suicide help line, where shes gotten another mystery call from someone who doesnt speak, a young boy shows up at her home. He doesnt speak but he knows American Sign Language which Mary knows because she used to work with autistic children.
The boys name is John Matthew and he is an orphan who was named by the nuns at the orphanage where he was taken after he was found abandoned. He is now living on his own in a dingy apartment. Hes the one who has been making the anonymous phone calls. While sitting outside and talking with him, her neighbor, Bella, comes over and meets John as well.
Bella is shocked when she sees the bracelet the John has made for himself. The bracelet says the name Tehrror in the vampires old language a warriors name. John tells her that he doesnt know what it means. He just saw it in a dream. Bella goes home and puts a call into the Black Dagger Brotherhood hoping they can help, because she knows that John is a pre-transition vampire and hes going to need someone around to help him go through the transition.
She is instructed to have John ready to go to the Brotherhoods compound with her the next night. They will send a car to her place. Then she tells them he doesnt speak but can sign and needs an interpreter but the interpreter is human. They tell her to bring the human. They will erase her memory after the evenings events.
At the Brotherhood compound, Rhage meets Mary and decides that he wants her. He tells Bella that she needs to make arrangements for him to have a date with Mary. She is resistant and the king, Wrath, is not happy about this plan either. Getting involved with humans is not a good plan. He convinces them to allow it because hes going to force a meeting if they dont and hell erase her memory after the one date. No big deal.
Mary doesnt understand why Rhage, who is devastatingly handsome and has women practically throwing themselves at him wants to date her. He doesnt scrub her memory and then on their second date, they encounter some lessers and in the process of fighting them off, Mary loses her purse which has her identification information.
Now Rhage cant leave her alone at her home because the lessers will show up there and try to harm her. They wont know that shes not one of them. He spends the first night at her place only to have her find out hes a vampire the next morning when he is burned by the sun. After that, he goes against Wraths wishes and takes her to the Brotherhoods compound for safe keeping.
While Rhage is pursuing Mary, Tohrment is pursuing John trying to convince him to move in with the Brotherhood. He gives him his cell phone number and says to whistle when he calls him. Hell know its him and come pick him up.
Bella has also become enamored of one of the brothers, Zsadist. He doesnt really understand why shes not attracted to his twin, Phury, who doesnt have a scarred face and is much more pleasant to be around. Bellas brother, Rehvenge is not happy about her wanting a relationship with one of the Brothers, but hes not happy that shes living in a home on her own either. He feels its too dangerous and in the end, he is right.
I liked this story better than Dark Lover. The sacrifices for love and redemption are in this story as well. I also like how the author is building the series and introducing characters and relationships that will be the stories told in the future books.
The story arcs about the lesser are there the Mr X thing doesnt seem as bad. Im not sure if thats because Mr X is replaced by Mr O or if Ive just gotten used to the overuse of the lesser formal name.
And, theres lots of sex.

This is the 2nd book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood by Ward. I enjoyed this book, though not as much as the first book. The characters are very engaging and there is solid world-building; although the focus is definitely romance for this novel. I listened to this on audio book and it was very well done.
This is the story of Mary and Rhage. Mary is fighting with Luekemia and loosing the battle; she is drawn into contact with the Brotherhood as she serves as translator for a young boy that she helped through her volunteer work for the Suicide Hotline. Rhage is the most beautiful of the Brotherhood and is in constant battle with his Beast. When Rhage offended the Scribe Virgin she cursed him to 200 years bound to the Beast. Rhage is inexpilicably soothed by Mary's voice and is determined to make her part of his life. Around these events the war between the Lessers and the Brotherhood rages on.
Ward has again created captivating characters that have wonderful chemistry together. I did like that Mary and Rhage take a little more time to develop their relationship than the two main characters in Dark Lover did. It made the romance between them seem a little more realistic and romantic. Mary and Rhage have huge obstacles to overcome in their relationship as Rhage fights to control the Beast in Mary's prescence and Mary fights for her life against Leukemia.
I like Rhage as a character, he had some awful choices to make in this book and it was interesting to see him battle through them. I wasn't sold on Mary as a character because she seemed just a bit...cold to me or something. At points I felt like they interacted like children; they would argue about stupid things and neither was ever willing to be honest with or listen to the other. In the end their chemistry worked, but there were points mid-book when I wanted to smack them both.
I really enjoyed how Ward started to set up the story between Bella (Mary's vampire friend) and Zsadist for book 3. Zsadist is the most damaged (and most interesting of the brothers to me) so I am eager to hear his story in the next book, Lover Awakened. The story between Butch and Marissa is mentioned but not really developed any more.
This book did drop a lot of the plot to concentrate on the romantic development between Mary and Rhage. That irritated me a little. I felt like the overall story of the battle between the Lessers and the Brotherhood definitely took a back seat to the romance; much more so than it did in Dark Lover. I am hoping that book 3 picks up the story more and puts a little more urban fantasy into the paranormal romance.
Ward's writing is lovely and captivating. There were a couple of eye-rolling moments for the over-the-top romantic descriptions; but for the most part the writing sucks you in. This is a guilty pleasure and definitely more romance than paranormal.
Overall I ended up enjoying the book, but not as much as the first book. This book definitely focuses on the romance and doesn't spend as much time developing the world and moving the plotline forward. The characters and writing are still very engaging and the book was hard to put down. I look forward to reading more about Zsadist and Bella in the next book, Lover Awakened.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a band of warriors dedicated to protecting the declining vampire race, Rhage is a brother with the strongest appetites. He is the best fighter, most impulsive and most voracious lover because of a curse placed on him by the Scribe Virgin, a mystical force counselor to the Vampire King and dispenser of privileges. The Lessening Society is an Order of slayers convened by Omega, a malevolent mystical figure and dedicated to wiping out the vampire species.
This is the story of Rhage and Mary. Mary is a human unwittingly thrown into the vampire world. Mary has a curse of her own-- cancer. She has suffered hardships and lost her faith in God.
Five stars.

Second book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yes, it seems like "just another vampire book," there seem to be an abundance of them lately. However, this book expands the genre some, with the Brotherhood in charge of defense of the vampire community.
I liked this book more than the first, probably because we are starting to get more comfortable with the characters, and learning more about each of the members of the Brotherhood (and their enemies, the lessers). The first had so many characters to introduce that you only got a cursory glimpse at each, except for the main character of that one, Wrath.
You learn a lot more about Rhage in this book, and Vishous gets some character development too, a welcome expansion of this character. Rhage meets Mary, who is as strong a personality as Rhage; most of the story is them working through their relationship.

My favorite of all the Brotherhood books! If you are a vamp fan, you gotta read this!
If you haven't read "Dark Lover" (the first book in this series)...stop! You'll be able to follow the plot, but the introduction of the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) in the first book make this one so much better. If it's been a while since you've read "Dark Lover," be sure to skim the glossary at the beginning of the book to re-familiarize yourself with the BDB lingo.
"Lover Eternal" is the story of Rhage. Remember? He's the sexy one. Oh wait, all of the BDB is sexy. ;) I like that this author develops all of her characters in a balanced way. Of course, the main focus is Rhage and Mary's story. However, characters that have appeared previously play a prominent role, as well. The book would have been pretty average for me, otherwise.
Although the story ends on a cliff-hanger, it is set up well for Ward's next book in the series.
Happy reading, everyone!

Rhage is my new favorite brother!! I LOVED his story. I've read this series somewhat out of order (which I don't recommend--it really needs to be read in order) and up until now I thought Z might be my favorite, but I was wrong. I thought the story was good & moved at a good pace. Wrath and Beth were only in a couple short scenes, but we got the opportunity to know the other Brothers a little better, and I'm really looking forward to the next book.

The second book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. This is the tender story of Rhage and Mary. Mary can not understand why Rhage is attracted to her at all. After all she is so plain and he is just, well, beautiful. Mary is accepting of Rhage's inner beast and can even calm Rhage. Mary does not have long, however, and Rhage will stop at nothing to try to save her. Also the introduction of John Matthew.
One of my favorites in this series.

This book had a similar story line, but with different characters. This book was about Rhage, one of the Brotherhood and for many reasons the most dangerous, and Mary Luce a human mortal. Within the brotherhood, Rhage is the vampire with the strongest appetites. He's the best fighter, the quickest to act on his impulses, and the most voracious lover-for inside him burns a ferocious curse cast by the Scribe Virgin. Owned by this dark side, Rhage fears the time when his inner dragon is unleashed, making him a danger to everyone around him.
When Rhage meet's Mary it's her voice he hears first. Her sound is like water upon his dry and parched skin. She's is the only one who can sooth him. At the sound of his voice he feels calm and his inner beast feels soothed. This would be perfect if she wasn't human and dieing. Mary Luce, a survivor of many hardships is unwittingly thrown into the vampire world and reliant on Rhage's protection. Mary is not looking for love. But when Rhage's intense animal attraction turns into something more, he knows that he must make Mary his and Rhage finds that he would do just about anything for the woman her loves and wants as his mate, but can he keep her safe when it's what's insider that's killing her. He wants her more than his next breath, he burns for her and yet he'd go through so much more to keep her alive and safe. And when he finds out her time is almost out what will he do to save her....
