This is the story of 2 brothers in 1960s India. They are close and very intelligent. One is quiet and the other is more of a rebel rouser. India got its independence in 1947 so the country is new with lots of political factions wanting control. One is very involved and the other goes to the US to continue his studies. Although they are living apart, their lives are very connected. The story goes up to current times. It is a very interesting read with lots of tidbits about the culture. I would like to read something else by this author.

Though this author has received many awards, and the book is well written, I found it quite depressing. That said, I love historical fiction and learned more about India in the last four or five decades than I never knew.
