Would he ask her to stay? Her resignation was typed and ready. But Joan was strangely reluctant to submit it to Brandt. Her resolve that she was doing the right thing hadnt wavered, but Brandts unexplained actions raised hopes she couldnt entirely shrug aside. Then everything changed with Brandts words. Miss Somers, he said curtly, Im prepared to accept your resignation. And please make it clear to the agency that this time I want someone older and married. Someone I can rely on not to be carried away by ridiculous flights of fanciful imagination!

Why didnt you tell me to go? Brandt demanded quietly. I thought you were different. The lack of anger in his voice made his words all the more cutting. But youre as self-centered as the rest. The acid sting of tears burned Joans eyes as she forced out the words. And how does a person go about ordering her boss to leavewithout losing her job! Her heart was shattering into a thousand pieces like splintering glass, knowing he believed she had deceived him. Suddenly Brandt turned her around and his mouth punishingly covered hers for a white-hot moment. When he released her, his eyes were cutting her to the quick. Tell me, Joan, were you really afraid of losing your jobor did you see a means of keeping it?

Really enjoyed reading this series of books. A romantic tour of America with a different story about each of the 50 states.
