I have often marveled at Escher's work, but having a paragraph-long introduction to each piece made an enormous difference. This man had the most incredible spatial skills of anyone I've ever heard of. Some techniques that we take for granted in this age of computers (like morphing) may be been invented by him. I expected to breeze through this book in an evening (it is a picture book, after all), but ended up spending a month with it. The longer you examine the works, the more compelled by them you become. The fact that many of these images were produced by repeating images carved into a wood block makes them all the more impressive.
