ISBN 1887942416 - All right, I'll admit it. The dog standing on top of the cat on the cover is what made me want to read to this one. I love dogs, I love cats, but books that make me laugh trump them both and don't shed.
Mad Dog is a bad dog, who gets into everything. No one wants anything to do with him until he changes his ways.
The rhyming text is ok, but I have to admit it's starting to grate on my nerves that at least half of all books for kids are in rhyme. One thing that might be a plus for some - the story is by Marjorie Adams, who is identified inside the back cover as a second grader; her story will keep them reading. Author Leslie McGuire does a good job with simple, easy to read text but illustrator Steve Haefele makes this book. The images are laugh-out-loud funny, bright and colorful and suited to the whimsical story. Few books for First Graders have ever appealed to me quite so much.
