I read this today to a first grade class, when I read the line "and at the tiger at the zoo, Madeline merely said "pooh pooh!"" I lost the class for about 10 minutes.
Perfect for gift giving!
Beautiful gift book. Poor Miss Clavel! In "an old house in Paris that was covered with vines," Miss Clavel oversees the education of 12 little girls, the littlest of whom is the mischievous Madeline. Despite her size, she fearlessly pooh-poohs the tiger in the zoo and frightens Miss Clavel with her adventurous antics. When she awakens the entire house with her plaintive cries in the middle of the night, Doctor Cohn whisks the appendicitis-stricken Madeline off to the hospital where, some two hours later, she awakens to find a scar on her stomach! The scar (not to mention the flowers, toys, and candy given to Madeline by her father) proves quite interesting to the rest of Miss Clavel's charges when they make a special trip to visit her. Ludwig Bemelmans's lilting rhymes are music to children's ears, and the quirky, oddly perfect drawings of the girls in "two straight lines" lend an enticing Parisian flavor to this perennial children's favorite.
The inside Cover Reads:
Madeline needs no introduction. The story about Miss Clavel's twelve little girls in Paris is a childhood classic.
"mr. Bemelmans' drawings of the Opera, of Notre Dame in the rain, of the sun shining on birds and children in the Luxembourg and Tuileries gardens have put an authentic Paris within the covers of this book. The rhymes in which the tale is told make it one that children will enjoy repeating."

Love this rhyming story of the sweetest girl in story books today.
classic children's book
A favorite from my childhood, and I love them as an adult too. Bemelmans has a great sense of humor.
One of the classic children books of all times
This book is very interesting with 12 girls in a line.
Funny, I spend a lot of my time teaching 1st graders about 10s groups (2 groups of 5), then along comes 12 girls in 2 straight lines. What's a digital theoritition to do?
YOU AND YOUR CHILD WILL LOVE THIS WONDERFUL MADELINE BOOK!!
This version is a small book, just under 5" x 8". A great choice for portability!
Synopsis
With one of the most well known and lovely opening sentences in all of children's literature ("In an old house in Paris that was covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines"), MADELINE is an unforgettable picture book about a truly unforgettable character. This story, the first in a series of books about Madeline, introduces readers to life at the French boarding school run by a kindly nun named Miss Clavel. Although she is dedicated to all her students, Miss Clavel must pay special attention to the activities of her youngest charge, a feisty girl named Madeline. Here Madeline faces an emergency visit to the hospital to have her appendix removed. Color paintings, which depict such Parisian landmarks as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, and the Luxembourg Gardens, accompany the rhyming text. MADELINE is a 1940 Caldecott Honor Book.

The beloved children's classic about the old house in Paris that was covered with vines, in which live twelve little girls in two straight lines.
A FAVORitE ArounD our HOuse!
children's book about hospital visit (appendix). no collection is complete without madeline.
Madeline has always been a favorite. It's getting harder to find copies of the books "out there," but fortunately Bemelmans' grandson has studied his style and is now writing his own Madeline books. So look for new titles!

It would appear, after reading this to more than one group of 1st graders, that the most memorable line in the English language is "To the tiger in the zoo, Madeline just said Pooh-pooh"".
