This was a fun one to read. Ben Holiday purchased a kingdom and the adventure begins. He meets a talking dog, a girl who turns into a tree and a host of others.

This is one of my favorites! I read and re-read this book until the cover fell off (not that that stopped me from reading it again!). I highly recommend this book. You will NOT be disappointed!

Not as good as his Shannara series but a decent book nonetheless.

Landover was a genuine magic kingdom, with fairy folk and wizardry, just as the advertisement promised. But after he purchased it, Ben Holiday learned that there were a few details the ad had failed to mention.
The kingdom was in ruin. The Barons refused to recognize the king, and the peasants were without hope. A dragon was laying waste the countryside, while an evil witch plotted to destroy everything.
Ben's only followers were the incompetent Court Magician; Abernathy, the talking dog who served as Court Scribe; and the lovely Willow - but she had a habit of putting down roots in the moonlight and turning into a tree. The Paladin, legendary champion of the Kings of Landover, seemed to be only a myth and an empty suit of armor.
To put a final touch on the whole affair, Ben soon learned that the Iron Mark, terrible lord of the demons, had challenged all prospective Kings of Landover to a duel to the death - a duel which no human could hope to win.
The task of proving his right to be King seemed hopeless. But Ben Holiday was stubborn. . .

Terry Brooks is a BRILLIANT fantasy author and I love how he weaves the modern world into a fantasy style old world in this story. The characters were endearing and I enjoyed the book very much.

This is definitely the perfect story for anyone who's always dreamed of escaping their life. The protagonist succeeds only to find that no matter where you go there is always responsibility. For me, this story resounds most with boys around 10-15.

This book had a very different story line which I liked. It seemed to take me a long time to finish because sometimes it would get slow. If you like fantasy you probably will really enjoy this book.

these books in this series's are light reading...more geared to young readers...I enjoyed them but they are really a fairytale told in modern times...perhaps even to read to young ones just for the pleasure of sharing that quiet time together.

The first in the series, Terry Brooks subtly draws you in and uses his awesome way with words to make you feel like you are there and that this could be happening to you

This is a fun, easy read and a much less dark fantasy novel than the Shanara series with a good moral at the end.

This is the first in the 1990s series by the same name. Herein we find out how come the Court Scribe ended up a dog, and what causes the beautiful girlfriend of Ben Holliday to be green, as well as just how disenchanting and dangerous a Magic Kingdom can be.

First in the Magic Kingdom of Landover series and an enjoyable entry in the type of fantasy series where modern-day folks encounter traditional fantasy worlds with knights, dragons, faeries, elves, etc. I've read much of Terry Brooks' other work including the more traditional fantasy Shannara series and also his modern-day Word and the Void magic series so thought I would give this a try. I wasn't disappointed. It takes a while to get going, but once it does, you find yourself in a delightful, magical land with blue trees (that are edible) and a host of interesting characters, including a living castle. I'm already in the process of acquiring the rest of the books in the series and I hear they just keep getting better!

I loved this book. I am not a huge fan of fantasy, yet this book hooked me...I waited and waited as each book came painfully slow from the author. I am really glad I read it. I plan to re-read them before the next generation of Magical Kingdom comes out!

I really enjoyed this book. It's one of the few fantasy books that also has part of it set in the "real" world that I've enjoyed, and I laughed my way through this one. There are several books set in this world, but they are not a "series" in terms of needing to read them all to finish a story. This is the first (thus the best place to start) and a complete story all by itself.
