This book is wonderful. I read it during a time of my life when my MIL was very ill and hospice began to come in to her home. This book gives a compassionate look at the comfort families get from the smallest acts of kindness, even a cat's steady determination to pay homage to those on their way out. Friends of mine also enjoyed this book.

It was fascinating to read about a cat that was able to distinguish the last hours of a person's life in a writing style that showed the compassion this book did. Easily a subject that lent itself to drama and hyperbole the narrative was refreshingly calm and ordered.

Whether you're an animal person or cat lover, this book is a very good read. Based on a true story of a doctor working with elderly Alzheimer's and dementia patients, it touches on many end-of-life decisions and situations. And the amazing gifts that animals offer to us. Touching. Laughed and cried while reading it. LOVED IT!

Maybe I enjoyed this book because I recently went through the caretaker process for my mom, but this book is fantastic! Read this if you have been a caregiver, are a caregiver, may someday be a caregiver, or want to see improvements in our elder care. Dr. Dosa takes us through his journey of accepting that Oscar DOES have an incredible gift he gives freely to family members and the patient helping to ease to very tough time in their lives.

Definite a book for all cat lovers. Good book about Alzheimer's as well. There is something for everyone. Cat quotes and paw prints at the start of chapters. I found it a little slow but once you get going it is a quick read.

As an old nurse, I found the description of patients and families to be very realistic. The magic is in the CAT. Oscar affected the doctor. Medical folks can drift into a regular thought pattern, not actually seeing all that is there. Easy read.

I loved this book and it hit home in a multitude of ways. My cat used to always be my companion when I was sick and I had a parent with Alzheimers and dementia, that I had to place in a nursing home. So I really understood what was going on with these families. I wish the place he was in was like Steere House. What a great place. Good read for sure.

I absolutely adore this book! Watching my own mother pass away from cancer and seeing how her dog interacted with her I believe that Oscar has that special gift too...the gift to comfort someone in the darkest of times. We all must die alone but with an animal lying by your side, purring or just snuggling I truly believe it brings comfort not only to the person who is passing on but those who are there with them. This is a beautiful book, simply written. The author starts off not believing that a cat could be capable of showing this kind of knowledge or empathy and by researching he finds it to be true. This book gives me hope and less fear of death since I have 4 pets. I KNOW they will be there for me at the end of my life as they are for me now.

This is a sweet tale of the cat with an uncanny ability to sense when someone is near death where he lives in a nursing home. Many if not all of the patients have Alzheimer's disease. I found it to be more than the story of the cat who comforted them in the hours just before they passed away. As the doctor who narrates the story does his research about the cat, he speaks with the families of the deceased in depth. They relate the stories of their loved ones. I found this to be basically gentle instructions on how best to understand and help the Alzheimer's patient themselves. In that regard, it was very enlightening, and I would highly recommend it to anyone trying to deal with this terrible disease. D.
