I was so excited when I saw there was a sequel to Bird Box. I was one of those that had to pre-order it because the anticipation was just too great. I was worried that it would not hold up to my expectations. Fortunately, it did. Was it as good as Bird Box? No, but it was pretty close.
The story starts off at the school for the blind but it has been 2 years. Before I could even settle down and get cozy with the book, the craziness happens. I was on the edge of my seat from the start. That is just the first chapter. Then we are bumped to 10 years later. The kids are now 16 years old and Malorie is much the same. They have lived a quiet life and have lived it strictly by Malorie's rules. Then a stranger stops by claiming to be with the census and their whole world gets upended.
The book kept me entranced. Although, I wasn't as terrified as I was in the first book, it did have some scary moments. There was a lot more character development in this one with the kids but that also made it to where I wanted to smack Tom and Malorie quite a few times. Also, the ending felt a bit rushed for everything they had been through on their journey but I still enjoyed it.

Oh, I really enjoyed this! It always goes back to the fear of the unknown and that whole business of living your life blindfolded (or by the fold as they call it), dodging creatures so that you don't go mad and go on a killing spree. It's creepy stuff. The only difference from Bird Box is that Malorie's children have grown into teenagers and her son is quite rebellious, so the reader sees all the potential of what could go wrong (and does go wrong). But there's a message here too about parenting and the balance of a parent's wisdom and a child's need to pursue their own dreams and when to act on them.

At first, I was quite annoyed by Tom's resentment (omg, what are you doing, Tom?), but by the end, the reader can see that events had to happen the way they did. But all the scary stuff is there, and it opens with a hair-raising scene. Olympia has secrets of her own, too. I still enjoyed Bird Box more because it was just so different, however, Malorie is a damn good sequel. 4 stars.

This is a really good sequel to Bird Box! It started out with a bang and was pretty intense the whole way through. Once I picked it up I burned right through it! I liked the ending, too.
