This is the first book that I have read in this series and the second by Bill Crider. I really liked this story and I never did guess the murderer so that makes it a good read for me. There were so many twists to the main plot and subplots that the book really held my attention. I had just watched a History channel on cable show about tracking Big Foot, so that subplot in the story was interesting. Also, I find archaeology fascinating so the mammoth discovery was intriguing too. The banter between the two older guys working for the sheriff made me grin. They sounded like two squabbling kids which hit close to home.

This was the first Sheriff Dan Rhodes book I read - now I've checked them all out of the library because I can't stop reading them - and am collecting them through paperbackswap to keep - you'll love this series!

It starts with Blacklin County, Texas, oddball tough-guy Bud Turley asks Sheriff Dan Rhodes to guard an enormous tooth Bud found, which he claims belonged to Bigfoot. Shortly thereafter, the body of Bud's friend Larry is found in the vicinity of the 'discovery'. Bigfoot enthusiasts are convinced it's the creature's handiwork, especially when an elderly woman who ran a feedstore nearby is found with a broken neck. Rhodes suspects a monster of the more human variety.
Though feral pigs, copperheads and other dangers roam the area, Rhodes thinks both deaths are connected to the disappearance of a local boy a decade earlier. With Bigfoot mania running amok at his crime scene, Rhodes quietly pursues the trail of a killer with a deadly reputation of his own that he wants to keep buried.

This is the lucky 13th book in the Dan Rhodes series by Bill Crider. For this edition the author pulled out all the stops; there are feral hogs, snakes, an old buried body and a couple bodies that weren't buried before they come to Sheriff Dan Rhodes' attention. If that isn't enough for the reader, there's a bit more humor included. Our 'crime-bustin' sheriff' has a lot of trouble running loose in Blacklin County. The Sheriff is much more active in this book; he has to face snakes and fighting Bigfoot fans in order to keep the peace.

He convinces a college professor to come look over the tooth; in the meantime, Rhodes keeps the tooth in custody. Bud and his friend Larry Colley are two of the County's quacks and resident Bigfoot hunters. When Bud is found dead, folks want to blame Bigfoot. This brings out all the Bigfoot crazies from around the nation to tiny Blacklin County, Tx.
