For those of us wondering, "Mankiller" was her father's last name, she married and divorced one man, and is survived by her 2nd husband (she died in 2010). I didn't read her book, but I'd guess her name affected her life somewhat.
The surname "Mankiller" is an old Cherokee name, but it originated as a title or rank that was earned. This is one of the interesting historical tidbits that you find in this autobiography. Wilma Mankiller tells not only her own story, but the story of her people. I found it to be informative and thought-provoking, as well as easy to read. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Cherokee history and culture.
