Compiled for the watch officers of a ship under sail, this little book provides the present-day sailor wtih a long look at the romance, professionalism, and tedium of a bygone day. It not only contains a wealth of detail on making and taking in sail, and chapters on studding stails and the bracing and trimming of yards, but examines the general duties of the officer of the deck at sea and the routine of the watch. It includes commonsense advice on both daily routine and such shipboard emergencies as weather-damage to rigging or the dreaded call "man overboard." A general section on weather has advice that is applicable to the modern weekend sailor along with some amusing poetic "saws" and "doggerel." A unique feature of the manual is an appendix containing more than one hundred standard commands to the deck and the helm.« less
