Walter Satterhwait is an excellent writer. His loose series of stories involving famous people in the early part of the 20th century has turned out be quite good. (I've also read his "Escapade," which involves Harry Houdini and Arthur Conan Doyle!)
The puzzle or mystery is satisfying, the characters are fascinating, and the atmosphere of another time and place is fully realized. It makes for good reading.
