Aline Bernstein, a brilliant costume and set designer, the first woman ever to be admitted into the Scenic Artists Union, as well the first woman to win a Tony for set design, here narrates a story about three men, the common thread among them a blue serge suit and the part it plays on a day in the life of each. The original was published in 1933. She also was the great love of Thomas Wolfe's life, and accepted as his best-written character, Esther Jack.
Bernstein won a Tony Award for her costume design for the opera Regina in 1949, when she was seventy. It was one of four shows she did that season. In 1953, she did her last design work, the costumes for the Off-Broadway production of The World of Sholom Aleichem.« less
