Ah, another Redwall book. After doing so much homework, my brain appreciates these books. (Not that they lack subtlety, or any sort of message, but for the most part, it's happy, enjoyable fluff about woodland creatures. And that makes me happy.) In Mattimeo, Matthias' son, along with other children from the Abbey, are kidnapped by the sly fox, Slagar, who is bent to see his revenge carried out against Redwall. In this tale, we follow some of our old friends, Matthias and Jess and Basil and we make some new ones as well, as parents join together to find and free their children. It's standard Redwall fare with adventures and battles and feasts. While every book in the series would still be a good story on its own, I think what makes these books so interesting is seeing the connections between the different times in each book, and seeing how the generations change. You see the bounding, ever hungry hare, and know, "That character must be related somehow to Basil..." or some other such thing. There is a lot of history with the Abbey that can be explored, and now that we've read of the Abbey's beginnings in Mossflower, and it's "present-day" adventures in Redwall and now Mattimeo, I'm sure there are still a lot of stories to be told.

As always, Brian Jacques paints a glorious picture in this tale of Redwall. Mattimeo is the very first one I ever read of his, many years ago, and it is responsible for my huge fandom towards the series today. Slagar is one of my three favorite Redwall villains. You'll really like this.

Great book and the second in an amazing set that has 20 books. Brian is a great author and deserves to be well recognized for his work. Read all of the Redwall books to know what I mean.
