Some worthwhile characters, but I was disappointed at the end of the book. I thought it was the end...but I was wrong. There's got to be a Part 2 because the main mystery in the story hasn't been solved yet!

Harley Fowler is a complicated man: he works for Cy Parks, who is friends with mercenary Eb Scott. He's always in the middle of trouble. Here, he meets investigator Alice Jones who, in the first chapter, comes across as a combination of Rain Man and somebody who's seriously off their meds. How or why Harley finds her attractive is the mystery here. This is part of the Long Tall Texans series, and it's probably the worst book of the bunch, mostly because of Alice.

I was happy to see that Harley finally gets his own story. The Maverick is a standard Diana Palmer book but Harley is definitely not quite her typical alpha hero; he seems younger, less experienced, and not as confident. He's not quite a DP alpha male yet. BUT, that said, Alice was definitely a much stronger female lead than she normally writes. It was good to see his story wrapped up in a HEA, considering how often he's the date for the other female leads in previous books. I'm looking forward to seeing how the upcoming books play out the mystery that began here - I can't wait for Kilraven and Blackhawk's stories.
