This was the first Leonard novel I read and it delighted me. Leonard is famous for his dialogue, which feels real, and often he can be very funny. I was particularly impressed with his grace in depicting sex and violence, which occur in moderate doses in his books. His characters tend to be criminals, some of them very scummy types, but he does not rub your face in gore and cruelty. Has a great ability to depict sort of red-neck hillbilly types with affection but without illusion. Good portrayal of cops as well.

Abridged. Read by Brian Dennehy. This is my favorite Elmore Leonard book. It's one of those classic South Florida crime novels filled with wacky characters and crazy actions. I found it laugh out loud funny! I will be sending you the two casettes in their individual cases. There is no outher box.

From Publishers Weekly: "Darker than his usual fare (something very bad occurs to a good guy), Leonard's latest is no less excellent. Elvin Crowe, of a habitually criminal Florida family, is out of jail and looking to run a scam on rich probationer Dr. Tommy Vasco, ex-friend (lover?) of Elvin's prison boyfriend. Turns out that all three were sentenced by illiberal Palm Beach County judge Bob Isom Gibbs, aka Maximum Bob. For $10,000 Elvin contracts to kill Gibbs, wondering if he can get more out of Dr. Tommy. Meanwhile Gibbs is trying to scare off his weird young wife, Leanne, a possible psychic sharing a body with Wanda Grace, a dead slave girl. Racist and sexist as any redneck, Gibbs has eyes for young Kathy Diaz Baker, probation officer for Elvin, Elvin's nephew and eventually Dr. Tommy. Still angry about a failed marriage to an Anglo cad, Kathy meets youngish detective Gary Hammond. They start working together (Who brought a gator to Gibbs's house? Who shot at the house? What's Elvin up to with Dr. Tommy?) and fall in love. Leonard's suspense, pace, humor and ear (probation officers talking shop, e.g.) are as wonderful, dry and true as ever."

Maximum Bob, the skirt-chasing, Florida judge has made a career of oversentencing vonvicted felons. Assasination isn't his only worry. His wife, who suffers multiple personality disorder, is embarrassing the family in Palm Beach. As bullets start flying, they all become tangled with a gang of smart crooks, foolish love and sweet revenge.

Convoluded, twisting, over the top and fun are all words that fit this book. Leonard does not write a heavy tome, but a lighthearted sarcastic sometimes even silly story.

This is an excellent book by Elmore Leonard(Get Shorty and lots of others). Any fans of crime fiction with a bite(and a snicker) will love this.

From the man who brought you "Get Shorty", this is another extremely well-crafted thriller. Set in Florida, a stomping ground Leonard knows too well, this one has corrupt judges, alligators, beautiful women, and, of course, lots of guns.

I love the way Leonard develops his characters, and makes you like even the corrupt ones, with all their flaws. Take this one to the beach with you.

This is another good read from Elmore Leonard. His great skill is giving us convincing "slice-of-life" stories from a sordid world, filled with intriguing and often unsavory characters. Don't expect happy, tidy endings. Go along for the ride and enjoy Leonard's vision and voice.

For me....I did not care for this book. The most ridiculous part of this book is a woman who all men want. She's just so beautiful!!! The plot is predictable. The killer is who you think it is. No imagination at all. Will not read anymore Leonard books.
I'm giving it one star cause I can't give it any lower.

I happen to like Leonard's style anyway, but this one may be the best of the lot!
