Never thought I'd see a book written by Nelson DeMille that clearly deserved less than a 3-star rating, but when one dreads picking up and continuing where one last finished, I'd say something went badly wrong. There are so many great books on my shelf waiting to be read, why suffer by reading a book where the author seems to have turned the lead character into a downright unlikeable, super-egotist with a false sense of humor that constantly makes me want to cringe? Unenjoyable as that is for me, what happened to the plot? So Jonh Corey, the one-time superhero detective with an outstanding reputation in law enforcement is out of work and down on his marriage; and a job offer comes along that he fears from the minute he learns about it is not at all what he feels will hold his interest (like a golf-pro with a great reputation who is hired to sell condominiums, as he describes it during his reflections). To complicate matters along comes a woman, an ex-lover who is still very much of interest. She is the person from whom he first learns of the job offer. And it is clear her motive for telling him about the offer is that his taking the job will give him a need to share a cottage where she is currently staying which will lead to a perfect opportunity for reuniting the old, undying flame they obviously still share. Okay, so I am well into this so-called story and still can see no inkling of the mystery thriller I was promised when I acquired this novel (Front page: A John Corey Novel). Sorry, but my time is short and well, I'm quitting. Two Stars, Mr. DeMille.
An interesting character, a good read. The writing style is entertaining. Part of a series featuring JOhn Corey, a supercop.

Nelson DeMille returns with his best thriller yet featuring former homicide detective John Corey who is called out of retirement to investigate a string of searing, grisly murders that take place a little too close to home. Corey is now in forced retirement and is asked by his former lover in Plum Island, Detective Beth Penrose, to help search for a serial killer who has murdered nine prostitutes and hidden their bodies in the thick undergrowth on a lonely stretch of beach.
This is my first John Corey book. I am enjoying John Corey's dry sarcastic humor which gives the book an extra boost. The book seems to be inspired and based on the unsolved Gilgo Beach murders. I want to go back and read the other books in the series. I found all the characters to be interesting and the plot action is such that it kept me reading until the very end of the book. I would highly recommend The Maze and find that if you like mystery thrillers, then you will love this book. I would like to thank NetGalley and Scribner for a copy for an honest review.
