Interesting book about how industrialization has ruined the quality of life for the animals, farmers, and the product that we ingest. The author not only presents the problem, but also promotes his answer. I don't agree entirely with his answer, therefore my review is probably less than favorable for that reason. I think he is much too zealous. I believe that we need only to recognize the facts that people in America want cheap food and are willing to compromise their health and the farming community by purchasing this poor product. What people eat is a very personal issue. People tie their food together with personal pleasures that they are unwilling to give up, until it starts to kill them. You can say the same thing of drugs (both legal and illegal). When we start to understand food as something that is not a recreational pleasure, but rather nutrients we need to survive, then we will begin to understand the relationships between our forks and the animals that die for our survival. Mr. Marcus would rather we thump people over the heads to get them to understand. I'm more for trying to understand what drives people to torture others for their pleasure and then divert them from that disfunction. But, sadly, as long as abortion and the death-penalty remain as acceptable practices, our politics will supercede the dignity due to humans and animals.
