I enjoyed this early Dirk Pitt adventure. Even though it was the first Pitt novel published, it was the second written - behind "Pacific Vortex." This one was full of the usual action and adventure from Cussler but the writing style was a little rough back in the early days. Pitt came across as a much harsher character - maybe he mellowed through the years. The story was also shorter than some of the later books and didn't include the usual event from the past that gets tied into the present. The story itself was good, but I didn't quite buy the premise of smuggling using a submarine attached to an ocean freighter. Otherwise, I would give this one a mild recommendation. I need to go back and read some of the other early Pitt novels.

Good fun, as always with the Dirk Pitt stories. Interesting in another way, too: This was one of the earlier (maybe the first?) of the Dirk Pitt novels. Both the story line and the characters are a bit less complex than much later books--which still takes nothing from enjoyment. Also fun to see Dirk and his buddy Al younger. For me, it was a bit of a "prequel," filling out some background and context. Well worth an evening or two.

Good standard Dirk Pitt adventure. Interesting twist on Mediterranen involvement in WWII. About a German commander who emerges years later and is a world-wide smuggler.

Damn I just love Dirk Pitt! He's not a hottie, heck according to Cussler, he's not even handsome; regardless, he always gets the girl. He's just like MacGiver, from that old TV show. Give him a toothpick and a high heeled shoe and he can get out of any death-defying scrape imaginable. Dirk is quick on his feet and even though he always gets caught, his unconventional tactics will amaze you. This time he and Al Gordino are sent in to Greece to help one of NUMA's research vessels that have been sabotaged again and again. Of course, Dirk and Al aren't satisfied just flying to save the day. No no no, Dirk has to get stumble on an ingenious drug smuggling operation and immediately get on the bad side of the culprit.

This was written in 1973 so it's not as involved and convoluted as Cussler's later Pitt novels. Even so, I enjoyed the hell out of it as I always do.

On an isolated Greek island, a World War I fighter plane attacks a modern U.S. Air Force base...a mysterious saboteur preys on an American scientific expedition...and Dirk Pitt plays a deadly game of hunter and hunted with the elusive head of an international smuggling ring.

This is just one of a series written by Clive Cussler and I have always found them to be very intertaining and have read the entire series. Always hoping for another to be added to the series.

This another of Cussler's books (the second in Dirk's timeline, I believe). As always, it was a pretty quick read and an exciting adventure. This adventure had Dirk paired up with his (seemingly constant) companion, Giordino.

Clive Cussler can always be counted on for unique, breathless adventures and clever writing. I can't wait to start one of his novels and suddenly I'm finished with it -- because it is almost impossible to put one of his books down until it is finished. His hero, Dirk Pitt, finds himself in rollicking adventures and he is up for anything - and that's what he usually gets, puzzles over, and solves. One of the little tricks Cussler plays is inserting himself, however briefly, into is stories. If you like fast moving suspense, intrique and adventure, this book is for you. From attack of an ancient World War I plane, to sabotage and smuggling, to a mysterious lady, Pitt has his hands full and you have hours of suspense and fast moving action.

I have read a lot of Dirk Pitt novels but had never read this one. It said on the cover it is the first Dirk Pitt novel. I don't think I have read one I didn't like. This one took place on a Greek island where an American Air Force Base comes under attack by a WWI Plane. How Dirk and Al come to the rescue and all their other adventures make good reading. As usual there is a beautiful woman involved and an evil bad guy. I enjoyed this book and look forward to any new Dirk Pitt books.
