Roger, his parents and his twin sisters are on vacation in France, and have rented a chateau. The strange, surly owner Monsieur Serpe has an equally strange daughter, Melusine, whom Roger befriends. But something peculiar is going on with them, and Roger, feeling the need to help Melusine, tries to find out what.

It's a strange suspense mystery with paranormal undertones, one difficult to pigeonhole. Its eerie atmosphere and dark themes make it more suitable for older teens, and it loses some coherence towards the end. While this unusual story is interesting, the unresolved paranormal aspect of it leaves the reader somewhat unsatisfied.
