Nikki Hunt was abandoned by her parents to her nana when she was only six years old. Her mother always told her that crying made her weak, and she has never forgotten it. However, she sure feels like crying. She's flat broke and is upset that she doesn't have the money to pay for her nana's cable. So when her ex-husband Jack calls her, wanting to get back together, Nikki figures she has nothing to lose, and her wallet could use the help.

Dallas O'Connor, along with his partners, Tyler and Austin, were sent to prison for a crime they didn't commit. They are free now and want to help others in the same situation. They operate DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS Private Investigations. The work trickles in and while they are not hot on a case, they work on trying to locate the drug lord who helped frame them. Dallas' brother, Tony, is a cop and doesn't like Dallas scoping out his crime scenes.

However, Dallas is having dinner with Tony when he is called to a homicide. Dallas just wants to stay out of the way, but the blonde runs into him and vomits. There is something about her that lures Dallas, so he follows her to the hospital. She's being accused of killing her ex-husband and stuffing him in the trunk. Nikki is beyond grief and to make matters worse, her best friend Ellen is attacked at her art gallery while she is in the hospital.

Dallas wants to help Nikki, he believes she is innocent. While he helps investigate her case to prove it, he begins to fall for her. Nikki is scared of commitment, but Dallas isn't looking for forever. But when the smoke settles, will they be happy with only today?

DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS is a delightful suspense-filled mystery with a sparkling cast of characters. The romance is spicy, the dialogue entertaining and there are some hilarious moments. Alongside the blossoming romance of Dallas and Nicki is Tony and LeAnn. They had a tragedy a year ago and separated. Tony tries valiantly to woo her back, and it is heart-warming and wrenching how he does so. I highly recommend DON'T MESS WITH TEXAS! I couldn't put it down, and I'm sure you won't either! It's absolutely charming!

Fun book to read. Love the humor with the story.
Not in the "same mold" as most of this genre.

Overall I guess liked it. It kept me engaged. Nikki annoyed me, I thought she was winy (oh poor me!) and a bit stupid at times. Dallas wasn't much better. He would think about how hot Nikki was at inappropriate times. I did enjoy the side romance with Tony and LeAnn (and it all would have been fine much earlier had they TALKED). The who-done-it was a bit of a let down.
The best parts of this book: the coffin sleeping dog (and dog farts) and Nikki spewing vomit all over Dallas.
I normally don't notice typos unless they are obvious. This one had some ones I saw (like Brain for Brian).
