Having lived in Mexico, I found the book fascinating....and ever so true to life.

From the back cover:

"When Los Angeles novelist Tony Cohan and his artist wife, Masako, visted central Mexico one winter they fell under the spell of a place where the pace of life is leisurely, the cobblestone streets and sun-splashed plazas are enchanting, and the sights and sounds of daily fiestas fill the air. Awakened to needs they didn't know they had, they returned to California, sold their house, and cast off for a new life in San Miguel de Allende. "On Mexican Time" is Cohan's evocatively written memoir of how he and his wife absorb the town's sensual ambiance, eventually find and refurbish a crumbling 250-year-old house, and become entwined in the endless drama of Mexican life. Brimming with mystery, joy and hilarity, "On Mexican Time" is a stirring, seductive celebration of another way of life--a tale of Americans who, finding a home in Mexico, find themselves anew.

you should read this book, especially if you are thinking about the expat life. I've been to SMA and loved it and have been thinking about spending significant chunks of time there so for me this was an excellent read. Good example of travel writing also, but mostly a good read for folks interested in Mexico.

Get ready for a trip to interior/mainland Mexico. I have traveled to many places in this country, but not San Miguel. His view along with true insight, color, texture and a taste of what Mexican life is really like in this country to our south.
Reading this takes me back to many of the events, sounds, sights and feelings that I experienced during time spent our amongst these people and culture.
Cohan brings to the page, in friendly detail, just how things are done there.
Along with his personal experiences, and challenges of trying to make it their home.

I found this to be a good personal memoir of what it is like to escape the U.S. culture and opt for a simpler life in a different culture. A sane life.
