Midnight at the Blackbird Café by Heather Webber is a magical tale with romance, mystery, family drama, grief and special blackbirds. I thought Midnight at the Blackbird Café was well-written with developed, warm characters, a charming small Southern town, and a dash of magic. I enjoyed Heather Webber's writing style which makes the book just fly by. I found myself drawn into this special story and it did not let me go until I finished the last word. Anna Kate returns to Wicklow, Alabama to bury her Granny Zee who owned the Blackbird Café. She was loved by all and the townspeople are saddened by her loss. Anna Kate expects to wrap up things quickly and then depart. Anna Kate feels a connection to the town and the café that compels her to stay. This gives her a chance to find out why her mother departed Wicklow so many years ago and why her mother vowed to never return. Secrets always have a way of coming out. There are also the blackbirds and something special that happens at the witching hour. Midnight at the Blackbird Café is a sweet and touching story that will have you craving pie. If you like Sarah Addison Allen, then you will this book by Heather Webber. Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe was a charming, folksy tale of small-town life where everyone knows and talks about everyone and everything that happens. Anna Kate is the granddaughter of Zee, who recently passed away and left her Blackbird Cafe to Anna Kate with some special strings. Since Anna Kate had promised her mother (deceased 4 years prior) that she'll attend medical school, she has short timeline to work at the cafe, tie up legal ends of cafe and get to school. Everyone keeps telling her that she should stay and run the cafe, but she declares: A Promise is a Promise.
Meanwhile, she interacts with her father's family, who shunned her mother after her father was killed in car accident. Lots of drama! It was a sweet book, very predictable, and too much happened way too fast, but after all, it is fiction.
This small-town life reminded me how much I could never live in a place where everyone is in your business. But some folks like that, so I'm glad we all have choices.
Now, back some grisy psycho-thriller for me!!

I was completely captivated with the small town of Wicklow, Alabama and the colorful cast of characters in this novel, some who have lived here many years, others who stayed when they intended to simply pass through, and others who recently arrived for various reasons.
This novel is all about secrets, family, grudges, reconciliation, returning home, spreading your wings, and mysterious blackbirds. The ending was a little too 'neat' but given everything these characters already experienced, I was glad to see many have a 'happily ever after.' This is a perfect summer read!
