This is one of my favorites of hers but is an older book that has been reprinted so is typical of her strong controlling male characters. Mercy finds a rare book that Croft has believed was destroyed in a fire several years earlier along with a man who should have been destroyed with it. He wants to see the book and frightens her; of course ends up 'with' her to keep her safe though she doesn't believe she's in any danger and of course he can't tell her what he knows...anyways, if you can stand a dominant male like this one (I happen to like her characters provided I dont have to live with them myself!) you'll like this story.

Mercy Pennington owns a second-hand bookstore and has gotten her hands on a book that Croft Falconer would almost kill so have. So would someone else, literally. A good Krentz novel with humor and quick wittedness.
Midnight Jewels is the story of a used book seller, Mercy Pennington, who stumbles upon a rare book in a flea market. The plot unfolds as she attempts to sell the book and discovers the dangerous situation surrounding it. The hero, Croft Falconer, competes with the villian to purchase the book and the story developes from there. This is not my most favorite JAK book but it is a good read, fast paced with nice character development.
Mercy Pennington liked to play it safe. Before she opened her cozy second-hand bookstore, she researched her prospects and minimized her risks. So she never should hav handled a rare edition of "Valley of Secret Jewels". And she should have locked the door of her shop before Croft Falconer walked in.
Falconer enjoyed violence, not literature-beautifully controlled violence of the Asian martial arts. And he looked fighting mad when he learned Mercy promised the "Valley of Secret Jewels" to another buyer. Flaconer argued with her, offering a small fortune, and then tender seduction. Mercy and Falconer lit sparks like the Fourth of July. But the real fireworks start when she discovered he ahd told her almost everything a woman falling in love wants to hear-everything except the secret behind the book of forbidden passion that could get them both killed/

This was classic Jayne Ann Krentz - nice blend of suspense and romance. A good read!
Jayne Ann Krentz (stephanie James, Amanda Quick). This is one of her better, earlier books (from 1987). Her style at this point is very much "taming of the shrew" which can get old after a while.
Interesting read. Classic Krentz.
Ms Krentz as usual has graced us with an outstanding read! The characters are realistic, the theme is suspenseful and leads you into a great mystery while wrapping your heart around a great romance.
All in all a good read...give it a try!
