A good but not great Koontz novel. A little bit over the top with monsters that evolve in too many ways. The general premise goes a little too far behind the reader's willingness to disbelieve. But no problem turning the pages.

In this chilling tale, Koontz seamlessly combines our most primitive boogeyman-type fears with the more modern fear of what unlimited technology wielded without ethics can bring. I can't give it enough stars.
Excellent book that will keep you guessing.
I much prefer Koontz' suspense novels to his horror and this one leans more to horror, not as much to my taste; still with Koontz it's ALL good.

This is one of Koontz's earlier bestsellers and is more of a straight-up horror novel than his current offerings but it's a great classic evil-corporation turning nice townspeople into flesh eating monsters tale that I enjoyed re-visiting very much.

Four people are the last hope of Moonlight Cove, because one by one the rest of the citizens are changinginto boogymen, werewolves, mythical creatures, or something entirely new. They are the New People, willing victims of a seductive experiment in chemically induced evolution. They can transform their bodies at will and eliminate unproductive emotions, like grief and compassion. In fact, the only instinct left to the New People is self-preservation, and their only emotion is fear.

The entire population of the little town has become a race of guinea pigs that New Wave Technologies can play with like a puppeteer a bunch of puppets. What's worse, they don't even know what's happening to them.
Men at the top are covering up a rash of mysterious deaths that have been occurring all over the village, but the FBI is on the case and has sent in their top agent, a man with secrets of his own, to uncover who or what is behind the murders. They suspect a serial killer, but the truth is far worse. This man, Sam Booker, blends in easily with the lackluster villagers, and yet when night falls he finds that he is the prey, and they become predators. It's all part of a scheme to advance human consciousness and to upgrade humanity to a new level, but inevitably there are drawbacks to any utopian scheme. In this case, a certain percent of the lab "rats" become monsters!
Others drawn into helping Sam include the lovely Tess Lackland, whose poor sister died in Moonlight Cove, and little Chrissy, whose parents have changed beyond recognition as a result of New Wave's consciousness altering drugs. An appealing VietNam vet has a handicap but that doesn't stop him for entering the ultimate battle between good and evil. Of course it all begins at . . . midnight! One of my all time favorites. Koontz is one of the best when it comes to mixing horror, fantasy and wonder all in one story. You will love it!
I really enjoyed this book.
Koontz at his best. I just got done reading this. It kept me up all night! It's suspenseful right from the beginning and keeps you hooked all of the way through. Koontz' characters are diverse and as a reader I was able to connect with each of them on at least some level. If you have never read a Dean Koontz book before, I recommend starting with this one, Lighting, or Watchers. Once you read either of these, you'll be hooked for life!

This is the only book by Koontz that I have every read. I chose it from the description on the back and while I do not agree with the LA Times that it was âbone chillingâ it was a good read. The basic premise of the book is that small town of Moonlight cove is having an issue with its citizens dying. In a town with no unusual deaths in 20+ years the FBI gets involved after they find out about 12 accidental deaths and suicides, but find that the actual number is closer to 20.
Four people join together, each with a piece of the puzzle that is Moonlight cove. A eleven year old girl, a wheelchair bound vet, a grieving sister, and an undercover FBI agent. They have until, you guessed it, Midnight, to get out of town.

This was a very scary tale. Sent chills down my spine and had me turning on some lights in the house.

Great book! I'm only getting rid of my books because of a need for space since moving to my new apartment. Unfortunately, I have to part w/ some of my books. I hope if you order it, you enjoy it.
