I found this book to be mind candy. A very simple plot with an immature 29 year old who has soap opera fantasies as the heroine(?). The narrative speaks of the struggles she has with her family and her life without a green card after a whirlwind engagement is broken within two weeks of her arriving in the states. Even so life falls into place for her. It is a simple read with a simple plot and a pat ending.

This is a quick and easy read about a Japanese woman's adventures living in San Francisco. I enjoyed the many references to popular Japanese culture and the many ways in which we can misunderstand one another.

Midori isn't having the best year. To escape her parents and the potential marriage prospects they throw at her, she agrees to marry an American and move to San Francisco. The night after the couple's engagement party, Kevin breaks off the engagement and Midori moves into a hotel.
Alone in a foreign country, she knows that nothing's waiting for her back home, so she decides to stay. She calls up the one man she met at the party and asks for advice.
Soon, she's sharing an apartment, baking goodies, and looking for a way to obtain a green card.

This book was entertaining but had a predictable and not so wonderful ending.
