This is not the typical genre for me but I do love reading about early American history so I picked this book up. I am glad I did. Its not your typical romance novel and has tons of interesting historical stuff. I found the homeopathy info interesting as well. There were some pretty graphic gorey stuff that was hard to read, some of which included children. That might be disturbing to some.
I look forward to this author's next novel.

Unbelievably fantastic novel of life in pre Revolutionary War America. Gritty, savage and brutal but also beautiful and loving. You won't regret reading this.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book, but I'm glad I read it. It was a well written story about Maggie being the only survivor of her village in Scotland, being trained as a midwife, signing up to be an indentured servant for four years in the US, and finding love. This story was violent and descriptive at times, but that doesn't take away from the story, it adds to the characters. I enjoyed reading this story.

I have to say probably one of the most favorites of mine I had read this year! So many different things going on but they all tie in together wonderfully, and I looooved Maggie (Mag-kie)'s character! I even loved the ending--will definately be on the lookout for more Christine Blevins books in the future!

This is a very genuine, easy-reading book about life in Colonial American prior to the Revolutionary War. The characters are very historically accurate and endearing. The pages take you through the struggles of a young Scottish woman who emigrates to the Colony for a better life. Her consequences for that choice are varied and complex. Some are foreseen and some where not envisioned in her plan for a new life. If you would like a lovely story to read, I would recommend this book.

What a wonderful book! It takes you into the personal lives of people living on the Frontier in the mid to late 1700's, and makes you feel that you are along for the journey. It's an interesting love story, but brings into play the hardships involved in living in that time and place. Ms. Blevins writing is clear and very evocative, and her character's conversations ring true even though they're often speaking in a Scottish or Irish brogue. Each of the people becomes very memorable and individual and you truly begin to care about or hate them. I found myself totally immersed in the period and unwilling to stop reading.I couldn't believe that the book ended! Anyone who is interested in American history will sure enjoy this novel.

If you like Sara Donati's Into the Widlerness or Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, this is a book for you! Great, fast paced historical fiction!

What an Adventure! This book really grabs you and doesn't let you go until the very last page! It was so hard to find "a stopping point" to put it down. Maggie Duncan is a rich character and her perseverance and strength is inspiring! Here you will find REAL Heroes and REAL Villians! A quick easy read, but some parts are hard to read with the gruesome details of life on the frontier. An excellent choice for the Historical Fiction Lover!
I really enjoyed this book & highly recommend it is you enjoy a look into our past.
Pretty good adventure story, tho some parts were way too predictable. Still, I'd say it's worth the read!
