I thought that I would enjoy this book since I am slightly into midwifery, but I found it more of a dramatic/sexual book. Instead of this book being a fictional book about the life of a midwife, I found it to be a cheap, gross book. Do not be fooled as I was and waste your credits.
Of course, if you like that kind of book than this is the book for you.
The Writing, I found, wasn't very good either.

I almost didn't list this book-it is one you will want to read and reread. Part thriller, part drama, and the complex relationship of a mother and daughter. Thought provoking questions about midwivery and delivery.

This novel and its sequel The Midwife's Advice, are fascinating. They tell the tale of Hannah Sokolow, Jewish-American immigrant and midwife. A look at the world of early 20th century immigrant New York, and how many of today's controversies were shaped by the events of 100 years ago.

A really enjoyable story (note, there is a sequel, The Midwife's Advice)... as an aspiring midwife, it was interesting to see so many parallels compared to the modern-day midwife's battle to practice legally even now in the 21st Century.

Older book, but an involving story.

From Czarist Russia to New York's lower East Side, an emotion-packed saga of life, death, and birth.

A good book about the life of a midwife around the turn of the century - kind of historical drama. From Czarist Russia to New York's lower east side. Purty good read!

Almost didn't post it too. It was a great story that I re-read and enjoyed each time I re-read it.

Historical, steamy novel.... first 150 pages go a little slow - but then it picks up - way up - I love this book and have read it twice. Full of accurate medical and historical facts and circumstances - especially around midwifery and childbirth.

Better than average novel about a young Russian Jewish midwife who emigrates to New York. Set in early 1900's, it's a good mix of family drama and midwife/medical issues.

I read the Midwife's Advice (the sequel) to The Midwife first which lead me to want to read the Midwife. These are two books that it doesn't make any difference which one you read first they are written so well that the book still makes sense!
