This novel and its predecessor The Midwife, are fascinating. They tell the tale of Hannah Sokolow, Jewish-American immigrant and midwife. A look at the world of early 20th century immigrant New York, and how many of today's controversies were shaped by the events of 100 years ago.
A young Russian emigrant hands out advice to her American patients at the turn of the century, and some of it is rather unusual for the time and place. This is apparently the sequel to an earlier book, and I couldn't get on top of the backstory enough to develop any interest in this one.
