I love reading, but I thought this book was terribly difficult to get through. I felt that it gave a lot of pointless background information before getting to a disappointing end.

"This rich, multi-layered work has been called a masterpiece of memory, as Maggie's rebellious childhood closely resembles that of Eliot herself. One of the most remarkable books ever written about childhood and a lyrical portrait of provincial England, this monumental work is a great novel of the Victorian age." -- back cover
