Detailed account of recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. Deep understanding into the feeling of the adict and exploration of possible causes for their problems. Involves the family and friends around him. Especially good descriptions of the people he meets in rehab.

A great read. Whatever about the controvesy. A moving read; fiction or not. Described issues that are real for a lot of people.
I read it before all the hoopla. Good, but a little disturbing.

Really graphic about going to detox from alcohol and drugs. Very real and gritty! Read by the author and well done.
is wasn't hard to listen to except for the extreme graphics which i had to skip here and there, also the repeating things over and over got boring after awhile, i mainly finished it to hear what happened.
A compelling story. I had hesitated for years to read it because of the scandal about memoir vs novel. Despite its status, it is a riveting account of addiction. After I listened to it, I sent it off to my recovering, soon to be ex-son-in-law. I give it a lower rating because at times I grew tired of the moment by moment narrative like "I entered the office, I sat down, Kenny spoke, etc"
This is one of the most different and yet saddest books I've ever listened to. I wasn't sure I would like this writing style when it started, but have come to love the honesty and believability of its form. Addiction comes in many forms and I completely understood the hunger and at the same time, the deep rage for the thing that is killing you and all of your hopes and dreams. I don't care about the back story regarding the writer and the Oprah show. This book made me think about addiction in a new way, and I appreciate his ability to make anyone, from the most naive to possibly the hardest of hearts, sit up and take notice. I look forward to reading other books by this author.
